Mom ate the youngest one today (at 15.36). Maybe he/she was too weak or they don´t have enough food for all the chicks.macko50 wrote:There are only three chicks this evening. :( What has happened?

Two chicks left. I heard Mom threw one out of the nest. And the man who lives there found the dead chick on the ground. It has been very rainy cold days lately, maybe not enough food too... :(

The mother killed it and threw it out of the nest. See video 22 mei. "Nare beelden: Kuiken het nest uit". "Bad pictures: chick out of the nest" But beware really no good scenes. At the end it says: "Mogeliijk heeft het kuiken kougevat". I could not find full sure but could mean that the chick got may be a cold, flu, influenza or so.Starling wrote:May 22

May be to protect the 2 ones left. I found also stories about storks that they kill when there is not enough food for all because it was hot and not enough food for all. Infanticide - Crown stimulants. Something new to me.

In English with Google Translator:
This afternoon around 12:30 we witnessed a major event at the storks, the mother bird picks up a young and throws it out of the nest.
We have seen this before on stork nests. As a young parent birds (no longer) found viable, then they kill it. The remaining boy have thus more likely to survive: there are fewer birds to feed and protect. Furthermore saved a weak young long (er) suffer.
A stork must be very fit to stand on their own. After fledging should he collect food. He must be able to defend themselves. He needs to make the south. Pull in autumn A journey full of dangers: lack of food, heavy (from downpours to heat), electricity pylons, hunters, etc. Only when he has survived three years he powerful enough to start a family themselves.
Not only powerful, but also decisive. So we will have to assess. Occurrence of the parent bird Nevertheless, it is very to to see for young and old. The clip is a warning: "nasty images", you can choose for yourself whether or not you want to view.
Finally, I can tell you that the young immediately after the occurrence of the soil is achieved. It was already deceased by the fall of 12 meters. The body is examined and the young stork had no food (or other residues) in the crop.
This indicates that the bird had no appetite, probably because of illness and debilitation. The fluffy chicks are still hard to cope with continued wet and cold weather. The managers of the nest, the young stork buried.

Thank you for your work, this explains a lot. I did not see the Explanation you posted. When I looked at the Video I was first shocked and felt helpless. Did not know why and never seen something like this. But I thought also that they must have a reason doing stuff like this, looked a little around in the Internet and so on. Thanks again.Starling wrote:
