Autumn comes near...
20 August 2021: LR1 & LR2 Lowes osprey juveniles 2021

In an unusual turn of events our eldest fledgling LR1 appears to have left Loch of the Lowes on migration before the resident female. LR1 was last seen on the webcam on Sunday 15 August at 20:20.

In our previous blog (When will NC0 leave?) we speculated about her departure date. Going by the dates set by our previous female LF15 we fully expected she’d have left by now. However, this is only NC0’s second year with us, and as we don’t know her habits and patterns of behaviour yet she’s still giving us surprises!

At the time of writing this blog, NC0 was last seen yesterday (Thursday 19 August) at 17:55. So we don’t think she’s left on migration just yet.

An osprey headed to the favorite dead birch and perched:

Note that reflexion on the Loch surface, it's only one bird not two..

Loch of the Lowes Visitor Centre and Wildlife Reserve

Now that it has been a couple of days since we have seen either LM12 or LR2, we believe that all of our ospreys have departed. We wish them well on their migration, and hope to see LM12 and NC0 next year.

Although our ospreys have left, there is still plenty to see on our reserve including: the great crested grebes and chicks, tufted ducks, golden eye, Egyptian geese, red squirrels, fallow deer, nuthatch, great spotted woodpeckers as well as much more.

Great news - we have a THIRD egg! 🥚🥚🥚
NC0 completed her clutch at 12:14, during a busy day with lots of excitement caused by intruding ospreys. Another female landed on the nest twice this morning, leading to spectacular displays from LM12 as he defended the nest.

The intrusions continue here this morning. These intrusions can be rather dramatic. They are, however, an expected part of the breeding season. In many ways that there is competition for nest sites is a testament to the success of ospreys in Scotland in recent decades. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHBSmbPMSd0&t=1s
To remind yourself what else might be in store between now and August, you can read the blog by our Species Protection Officer, Katie. (Link in the comments).
