Volunteers wanted as guardians for WTE breeding habitats/2011/Northern Germany

The observation starts in February/March. It´s described as no ordinary holiday - and no romantic idyll. You will be alone most of the time, you may slosh through mud the whole day and you will sleep in an old caravan. No toilet. No supermarket, no fridge. But, after all, it must be an indescribable experience.

If you want to be appointed as volunteer helper in the next breeding saison for one or two weeks (usually one week, from Saturday from Saturday), please send a written message (specifying your favored period of time) to:

Volker Latendorf
Projektgruppe Seeadlerschutz
Revierförsterei Dodau
Kreuzfelder Weg
23701 Eutin
GERMANY

Informations have been taken over from the homepage “Protection of the White-tailed Eagle Project Group from Schleswig-Holstein”.

More informations (allmost all in German), pictures, and the above mentioned experiential report as full text:

White-tailed eagle to be released in wildlife in Estonia, September 2012

"On Friday noon, September 7, a patient white-tailed eagle numbered 10-0034 will be released in Emajõe-Suursoo nature reserve, Tartu county, the Estonian nature fund ELF reports. The members of Estonian Rescue Board found the eagle swimming in the sea, close to Aegna Island, writes LETA."
Source: The Baltic Course, Tallinn, 06.09.2012 http://www.baltic-course.com/eng/baltic_news/?doc=9796

“In 7th of September we released that bird on the edge of big wetland called Emajõe-Suursoo, being one of the most suitable areas for White-tailed Eagles in Estonia. The bird is fitted with GPS transmitter, so we can see the further life of the rescued eagle, also we can help in a bad case. The transmitter was initially obtained within the ESTLAT Eagles cross borders project of Estonian Ornithological Society, but actually it is not eligible anymore for that project. So Eagle Club is searching for support to cover a cost of this particular transmitter. “

If you would like to support this project: viewtopic.php?f=63&t=509

Edit: The Eagle Club searched for support to cover a cost of this particular transmitter and many kind donors helped. At the moment the transmitter is free to use it again, because a poachers bullet finished the life of Nimeta. See next entry and sign a petition.

Petition. Estonia, November 2012

Ministry of the Environment of the Government of Estonia: Find & prosecute the killers who shot & killed the WTSE (eagle), Nimeta

The beautiful White Tailed Sea Eagle, Nimeta, who was treated and released by Dr. Madis Leivits in Estonia at the beginning of October, was found dead. He had been shot down and left to die in an area rented by hunters, and there is where he died.

This is an outrage and this raptor should not have had to suffer and die at the hands of poachers. This bird was on the first part of his migration out of Estonia when he was baited with dead animal carcasses, then killed. These killers must be stopped and prosecuted plus they need to be educated as to what they have done and are doing to the environment of the entire earth.

Environmental Inspectorate (Keskkonnainspektsioon) seek witnesses :help:

Update Nimeta, 14.11.2012: “Investigation into the shooting of the white-tailed eagle ended inconclusively

The press release from Public Relations Advisor Leili Tuul at the Environmental Inspectorate (Keskkonnainspektsioon) to the Estonian Public Broadcasting (ERR) news portal yesterday:

`Referring to the X-ray images it can be stated that in all probability the white-tailed eagle died as the result of shooting but specifically how it happened and who may have done it is still not clear.
In the tissues of the dead white-tailed eagle minute metal fragments could be seen but according to experts they cannot be extracted and analysed more precisely. Any bullet or shot has not been found in the carcass. The bird was badly damaged at the time of discovery – the entrails and breast had been eaten by other birds and animals. Following this it is not possible to state what kind of weapon or ammunition was used in the shooting of the eagle.
The Environmental Inspectorate has carried out the investigations that are feasible within the framework of a misdemeanour enquiry process, interrogating local hunters and inhabitants in the area as witnesses but they have not been able to help us further in the clarification of the eagle’s death. We have also made enquiries at mobile communications operators in order to secure information on movements in the area by way of communications but regrettably we have not obtained the hoped-for results.

If anyone has any information that might bring the investigation of this regrettable incident further we ask them to please inform the Environmental Inspectorate (Keskkonnainspektsioon)`, Leili Tuul added.”

:help: Österreich: Achtung, Giftköder melden! Gefährlichste Zeit für Seeadler ist jetzt. Winter

„Vorsicht Gift!“-Hotline: 0676 444 66 12

Winter is a dangerous time for White-tailed Eagles in Austria. The White-tailed Eagle feeds mainly on waterfowl and fish, but in the wintertime the birds feed also on carrion, and so they are easy targets for poisoning. The most common poison is the pesticide Carbofuran, which is banned in the EU since 2008. It is a pinkish-purple powder. WWF biologist Flora Hejjas encourages everyone who sees something suspicious to call the Austrian poison hotline. Even if you are not sure - report the incident.
“Poison Beware!”-Hotline (Austria) 0676 444 66 12.

Germany/The Alps, February 2015

:help: The Landesbund für Vogelschutz (LBV) is asking for sighting reports of Bearded Vultures. The species is extremely rare in Europa. A young bird was observed last weekend in the German Alps. Source: LVB http://www.lbv.de/unsere-arbeit/vogelsc ... geier.html

Contact for sightings: beobachtung@gmx.net oder bartgeier@gmx.at.

White-tailed Eagle Ingar found dead in Femanagh, Ireland. February 2015

“Ingar was almost 4 years old and spent most of 2014 on Upper & Lower Lough Erne. He was named Ingar (Norwegian name) and was released in Killarney National Park, Co Kerry, in 2014 as part of the reintroduction programme for the species managed by the Golden Eagle Trust in partnership with the National Parks & Wildlife Service. Given a chance he would have nested on one of the many islands on Lough Erne. Although we dont know the cause of death illegal poisoning has been the greatest mortality factor in Ireland. We urge anyone with any knowledge of the circumstances leading to the death of this bird to contcat the PSNI.”

:help: “If you can help please call the 101 number, quoting reference 6467215. Alternatively information can be passed via the independent Crimestoppers number on 0800 555 111.”
