177.While-Tailed Sea Eagles Abandon Nest. Ireland, May 2012

"Hopes that a pair of rare while-tailed sea eagles in Co Clare would successful breed have been dashed following confirmation that the birds have abandoned their nest and eggs."

Golden Eagle Trust project manager Dr Allan Mee "suspects that the chicks may have died on hatching but he also fears that the nest may have been disturbed by the high winds over the weekend."

178. Golden and sea eagle decline since Dark Ages mapped. UK, June 2012

"The decline in numbers of golden and white-tailed sea eagles in Britain and Ireland since the time of King Arthur has been mapped by the RSPB.
Researchers looked at places named after eagles in Gaelic and Old English to help estimate populations of the birds in AD500. From the Dark Ages, they drew on historical material and studies to map pairs of the raptors to the present.

179.Sea eagles taking lambs in Sutherland and Skye, crofters say. UK, June 2012

"Crofters in Sutherland and on Skye have raised fresh concerns about white-tailed sea eagles taking young lambs. Sea eagles, the UK's largest bird of prey, were extinct in Britain by the early years of the 20th Century. David Forbes, who crofts near Kinlochbervie, said the birds had been re-introduced into an environment very different from 100 years ago. Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) offers payments to crofters who claim the birds have killed livestock."

189.Stan the runaway sea eagle is happy to blow with the wind. UK September/November 2012

A 10-year-old White-tailed Eagle named Stan decided to fly away during the “Flight of the Eagles Show” at Warwick Castle on September 6th 2012. Stan is named after Kazakhstan, where he is originally from. Meanwhile, even though he lived in captivity almost all the time at the castle for more than eight years, Stan managed to survive “in the wild” for 2 ½ month. Since his escape he has been spotted several times.

192.News on the breeding pair from Mountshannon, Co Clare. Ireland, January 2013

This breeding attempt which was confirmed last year was the first documented nesting in Ireland in more than 100 years. It failed after the location of the nest was made public.
Nigel Beers-Smith returned to Mountshannon in late January to find out if The White-tailed Sea Eagles were still on the island.
He published a report on his blog nigel beers smith (White Tailed Sea Eagle. Mountshannon Co Clare, Ireland. January 26, 2013) http://nigelbeerssmith.wordpress.com/

Sea eagles fail to breed as another bird killed. Thursday, May 17, 2012
According to Allan Mee, project manager of the reintroduction programme, the birds had been sitting on their eggs since Apr 9 and chicks were expected to hatch any day, so the failed breeding attempt was disappointing and a bit of a shock. Over 1,000 people travelled to Mountshannon, in one weekend alone, to see the birds after their location was made public. "The birds have been very attentive and they have been doing really well, but there was a change on Tuesday afternoon when they left the nest a couple of times and eventually abandoned it," Allan Mee said.
