hello! :hi:

a new season has opened at the Pohtiolampi Osprey Centre near Tampere in central Finland: http://www.saaksisaatio.fi/en/ospreycenter/default.htm
they have a fish pond at the centre and there's a webcamera which can be found on this News-page:
http://www.saaksisaatio.fi/en/ospreycen ... utiset.htm
at the pond the fishing dives&catches of ospreys have been photographed already in many summers. on the Webcam-page they give this information (and lots of more!):
"Webcam in 2012
This year we installed a webcam at the end of March 2012. We try to keep it alive until the end of September. The Live Video Stream is available every day from dawn to dusk.
"

the weather is gorgious today but a lot of snow is left around the open pond (i don't know do they keep it warm in some way). osprey haven't arrived yet but they are expected to arrive by 1st of May.
Image

just as i was writing this i heard a whistling sound: a male goldeneye had landed (watered  ) on the pond! it's swimming and diving in the far end of the pond so it's impossible to get a decent picture of it. :slap: ..but i tried anyway.

thank you Katti! :loveshower:

i made a test video recording from the Pohtiolampi web cam. unfortunately i had to use the Debut recorded which is so bandwidth-consuming that all the other cameras drop out one by one (and it's also so power consuming that my PC begins working steaming hot  ) anyway, two men came there and were shoveling snow and throwing some in the water. the sound is not terrific but i heard two men talking. the sun is hidden in clouds.

There is news that there will be three or maybe four cameras in Finland this season, but we have only this one topic for all the 2012 cams.

the main news is that the osprey nest in Nauvo-island in Saaristomeri-area (the Archipelagic sea) in front of the SW coast of Finland (in front of Turku  ) is going to have a live camera. it is expected to be installed almost any day now. i just hope that the weather will get better here so that the installation crew can climb the sea mark tower on top of which the nest is. it has been snowing but it's not very cold: the temperature is on the plus-side.

the webcam can be found here:
http://www.balticseanow.info/en/Home/ex ... t.html.stx

this nest has been occupied by ospreys for decades and there has been a camera for many years already. during last winter a storm threw the nest down. now an artificial nest base has been built on top of the tower to help the ospreys. they don't have to start from scratch.

this is a "before"-picture showing what the nest and surroundings looked after winter. it's taken on March 26th at 16.52. the see was still covered with ice. the red and black cylinder is the lamp of the sea mark.
Image
with "me" inspecting the damages.

and this was taken two days ago on Apr 4th at 21.21. the bright lights that can be seen in the background is a house-sized ferry sailing from Stockholm to Turku. there's a bigger light in the stern and a smaller light in the bow.
Image

the third picture here was taken today at 12.41. the lens was half covered by icy water drops. the new nest bottom can be seen any way.

another osprey nest which has a web camera is situated in Janakkala near Hämeenlinna. it can be found in this address:
http://www.balticseanow.info/en/Home/ex ... n.html.stx

information from the webpage: "This osprey camera is situated in a pine and birch forest in Southern Finland. The surroundings are boggy. The camera is powered by a solar power battery. The camera is maintained by the Osprey Foundation and UPM ."

a picture taken today at 15.14. there's still a lot of snow in the nest.

the third osprey nest with a camera is situated in Hailuoto island near Oulu, on the Western coast half-way up Finland, near the bottom of the Gulf of Bothnia. the link to this camera is here: http://kotinetti.suomi.net/saaksi/index.php

this camera is privately owned and maintained by photographer Voitto Pulkkinen. a year ago he agreed to give permission to publish pictures from his camera non-commercially on forums like these, provided that his copywrite is acknowledged. the logo of his studio is watermarked in the corner of the pictures so i think it is enough to fulfill his condition that we don't cut out the logo out of the pictures. he has sold rights for viewing live video in previous years. remember that he does not allow publishing live video coverage!

have a look here before you post any pictures from this nest: viewtopic.php?p=63379#p63379

this is a picture taken today at 15.23. there's no snow in the nest but the surrounding bogland is still well covered by a lot of snow...

there's an Osprey-forum maintained by Ploughboy (who is also a member of LK-forum; hello Ploughboy! :hi: ) in this address: http://www.luotio.fi/forum/
it's mainly in Finnish, but i'm sure they don't mind if someone writes posts there in English, too.

the conditions of use of material obtained from the Hailuoto nest can also be found from this link:
http://www.luotio.fi/forum/viewtopic.ph ... 6d0334c730
there are also pictures from the surroundings of the Hailuoto nest taken earlier this spring. also this nest collapsed during winter storms and was repaired.

in the Osprey's Nest Forum they have a good collection of links not only to osprey nests around the world, but also links to nest cameras of eagles, hawks and owls, as well as other animals. i think it is worthwhile to have a look at the Osprey's Nest Forum.
as a detail i must point out that they have count-down clocks of estimated times-of-arrival of ospreys at the different camera nests in Finland!
at about 15.52 the readings were like this:

one more camera where ospreys can be seen is a fishpond Pohtiolampi at the Osprey Centre near Tampere in central Finland where a new season has opened : http://www.saaksisaatio.fi/en/ospreycenter/default.htm
they have a fish pond at the centre and there's a webcamera which can be found on this News-page:

a bit later at 11.54 a male goldeneye had landed (watered  ) on the pond! it's swimming and diving in the far end of the pond so it's impossible to get a decent picture of it. :slap: ..but i tried anyway.

Y229 is a photgrapher who is specialized in taking pictures of ospreys and WTEs. he takes also pictures of eagles' rings trying ot get them identified in the same way as Renno and Joosep (and humble us in the winter feeding place. :whistling: ) he also travels around with the guys who ring eaglets (but i don't think he rings birds himself).

i agree, he should write some more information about the pictures the in his folders, at least name them according to dates when the pictures are taken. of course he can't mark places very accurately, for protective reasons.

osprey is sääksi or kalasääski in Finnish. note the order of s and k in those two words. kala means fish, which is very appropriate for the osprey, and sääski means a mosquito so the latter name is literally fishmosquito! :rotf:
don't ask me where's the logic in that. English is not the only unlogical language. :D

this is how it looks at the Nauvo nest now at 8.13.
