**********Camera Status Update Thursday April 29**********

We are now splitting our views [on the GHO cam] between the osprey platform [P2] and the owl nest. The osprey camera views are as close as we can get, but we're happy to see our osprey couple busy in their nest. Of course, we won't be able to see them at night, so we'll only have Owl Nest Views then. Enjoy!
Link to GHO cam at the Rogers' Place:
https://explore.org/livecams/owl-resear ... ed-owl-cam

Our pair did return and attempted to nest in their reserved space. The geese took issue with this, and fended them off to their nesting place from last year. Even in that nest, the osprey faced a disagreement with a different pair of geese, but ultimately won over that area. So, they've put roots for the season in last year's nest, a nest we do not have a cam on.
As ORI has said before, there are countless places available for geese to nest, but fewer available for osprey. Despite the fact that our pair has nested elsewhere, ORI intends to continue discouraging the geese from taking root on the nest cam location. For this reason, the camera will remain off for a while.

And we wrap up the evening with our first hatch of the season! This video takes a look at the 27 hours between the first glimpse of the pip yesterday to the very brief glimpse of the newest nestling tonight.
Congratulations Rosie and Richmond! Richmond did a stellar job providing two fish for Rosie during the day, and there may be a fish tail on standby with him now as he waits on the crane cables.

We have a second hatch! The industrious nestling sprang loose around 7:13 this morning. Welcome to the world, little one.
One more hatchling expected within two more days.

See, if you time your arrival for the morning instead of nine o'clock at night you get fed much, much sooner. Of course then you might also fall asleep with the second bite only partway down your crop. 😍

Check this out and more in our official second hatch video.

With a large San Pablo Reservoir fish in the morning and a big, fat striped bass in the late afternoon it's surprising the nestlings aren't shaped like bowling balls about now! 😄 This video features some of the best views of these cute bobbleheads noshing down.

egg #1 - 4/29, egg #2 - 5/2, egg #3 - 5/5

Admin Mary :
Yes, you’re right, she is likely young, a first timer and doesn’t know quite what to do. She brooded a bit, I hope she starts brooding most of the time when she lays a third egg, if she does.

CarolV :
Maybe Missy’s hormone production is so low that her interest for the eggs only lasts for a short time after the eggs are laid. Possibly due to her age? We can’t really know but certainly can’t hold it against her.
Doesn’t make her a “bad” mom… just unready.
While disappointing, be prepared. That warning about nature being brutal can apply here, too. These birds are not here just for entertainment. They are living their lives . It is a learning experience for us.

April 15

VOM Jasmine Moderator :

BCO Fam,

It is with a heavy heart I write this. We all dreaded this tragic day would come to realization. 😔

Unfortunately, our superdad/resident male hasn't returned, and the window is most likely closed. 😢
Osprey do not take time off, and if he was still alive, he would have returned, and we would have at least seen him defending the nest. Osprey are bonded with the mates and even more so their nests which is why when they return to the same nest year after year. They do not typically move from nest to nest.

Next week, April 18-23, will be dedicated to remembering him. He was an amazing osprey dad that did both his paternal and lots of maternal duties...including but not limited to: poptent/mombrella, stick antics, multiple fish deliveries at the same time, algae shoes, his plastic ways, allofeeding and feeding mom, staying on the nest overnight and much much more.

We can share pictures, videos, stories, and everything else! He was on cam from 2012 – 2020, and quite possibly was the male on the nest when it was moved from the light array years before. He successfully raised and fledged at least 18 ospreys, increasing the population in the area, and I am sure we have seen some stop by throughout the years.

We love our superdad so much and he will be greatly missed! He taught many of us and even sparked the love of ospreys in us. He gave us so much joy, stories, and even some worries that will all cherish greatly. We are so thankful that we have had the opportunity to watch him over the years. In many of our minds, he is the greatest osprey ever, and his genes will be carried on in his offspring. Even though he is no longer here, he will forever be in our hearts. Rest in Peace, Superdad ❤ (Edited by Riv).
