Drama in the Audubon Connecticut osprey nest

A plastic part has settled over the ospret. During the attempts to get out of it, it fell on the back. The female seems helpless and tries to give shade.

Edit: It seems they have stopped the stream.
Edit 2: Stream is online again - little osprey survived.

2nd hatch

3rd hatch--- no video of the hatch. Chick hatched in the middle of the night when most of us were asleep.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

SuzAnne, owner of Dunrovin has named the chicks.

·
It's official. Harriet's and Swoop's three chicks are named after the vaccines that have brought us all so much freedom from the pandemic - and in the same order in which they were authorized in the US. Chick #1 = Pfiz, Chick #2 = Mod, and Chick #3 = JJ
Here is a photo of them eating their first fish of the day. Swoop scores even with a flooded Bitterroot River![/size]

This was the 1st hatch and it took over 8 hours. I was exhausted from pausing, waiting, record for a few seconds, the start pausing, again, waiting, waiting, waiting.

Therefore, I did not get back up and watch the 2nd hatch which was in progress at the same time but it started way later than the first hatch.

At 60 days post hatch, the eldest Osprey chick has taken its first flight on the morning of June 12! Watch the chick flap its wings and hover up and around the nesting tree before landing on the large branch above the nest.

The smallest chick at Barnegat did not make it. The poor baby was too small and didn't get enough to eat so it starved to death in the nest last week.

The chicks at Dunrovin Ranch continue to do very well and are very, very well fed by Swoop, the father. They have been named for the Covid vaccines that are in the USA and have saved many lives, no doubt.

They are: Pfiz, Mod and JJ, in order of their hatching. Ringing is scheduled for the first week or so of July.

July 16th and17th, Patuxent River Park Osprey Nest Cam 2 located in Upper Marlboro, MD

Welcome to Patuxent River Park's LIVE Osprey Nest Cam 2 located in Upper Marlboro, MD at Jug Bay Natural Area.

In June and July, you may see park staff handle the birds at these nests as part of our monitoring efforts. The park staff are trained and certified to do so

For more than 30 years, Patuxent River Park has been conducting scientific research to monitor the local population of Osprey. This includes installing nest towers and equipping birds with federal leg bands. One local female has been returning to the same nest for over 20 years!
For more information or to support the park's conservation efforts, please visit: www.patuxentriverpark.com

There is a new chick in Cam Nest 2. This chick was rescued this morning, it fell from the top of a barn silo and cannot be placed back on it nest and thus we have made the decision to place the rescued chick in Cam Nest 2 being that the rescued chick is the same size/age as the chicks in this Cam Nest, The mother Osprey of Cam Nest 2 accepted this new chick with open wings. Thank you all for being so interested in our birds here at the park.

Early in the evening, one of the osprey chicks was balancing on a stick on the edge of the nest when the stick gave way and the chick fell off the nest and went into the water below. Mom and the other two chicks can be seen straining to see what happened to the chick. Mom flies off to survey and then comes back to the nest. Rescuers were able to help the osprey chick and it was returned to the nest a couple hours later wet but uninjured. We are all very happy that the chick is back in the nest. I think this may have been the new foster chick that was put in the nest the other day.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
