Both Rosie and Richmond were active in building up the new nest today. Here's another comparison photo to illustrate the progress in the past week. Richmond also brought Rosie a big fish this morning.

Rosie glowed in the evening light yesterday. Probably won't be seeing this often once she begins incubation. And when might that be, you ask? Rosie usually lays her first egg around 30 days after her return from migration, at most 34 days in 2021. She is now approaching 40 days.

Hello everybody! My name is Celeste. I am this season’s Communication and Outreach Assistant for Audubon’s Seabird Institute.
Each week I’ll be posting a featured comment to the chat board so that we can all stay abreast of the exciting osprey happenings on Hog Island. Stay tuned, too, for a Google form in the coming weeks. There will be an opportunity to ask questions for a future Q&A event.
This week, I want to take the opportunity to introduce the ospreys that have been sighted on the cams so far. Although it is early in the season, two beloved osprey pairs have already returned to Maine. First, Steve and Callie have returned to their Hog Island Nest (viewable on the Audubon Osprey Nest and Osprey Nest Branch View cams) for their third year together. Steve landed on April 14 and Callie followed a day later. If all goes well during their courtship, the pair will decide to settle in the nest for the season. It looks promising so far, as the couple has been seen engaged in courting behaviors already.
Steve, seen here, has a pronounced tan patch on the back of his head. His coloring is much lighter than his mate's and his beak is more elongated.
Callie is identified by her gorgeous plumage. She's highlighted with calico streaks and spots, and her neck plumage is darker than Steve's. She can be a bit shy, and is known to have been spooked by the human activity at Hog Island last season.

Hello everybody! My name is Celeste. I am this season’s Communication and Outreach Assistant for Audubon’s Seabird Institute.
Let’s also welcome Skiff and Dory back to their Boathouse Nest (Audubon Osprey Boat House cam). Last year, the pair successfully raised three chicks, Schooner, Skipjack, and Sloop, to fledgling status in this nest. Hopefully, Skiff and Dory will bring another brood to flight this year.
Dory and Skiff, seen perched here, are a striking pair. Dory (left) has a spray of dark plumage across her chest. Skiff, looking regal to her right, is broad-winged and has a dark patch on his forehead.
Thanks to user Regina for these ID photos.

Audrey has found her new suitor!
It was touch and go for a bit, but we're proud of Audrey for moving on to a new dashing osprey. The new couple has built a nest, with some great decor courtesy of COF, and even had a mating attempt. Fingers crossed for some chicks this season!

Rosie thoughtfully laid a fairly pale, easy-to-see egg this afternoon on the new nest they built this year. This video has the magic moment and Richmond's first glimpse and incubation attempt of the egg. Congratulations Rosie and Richmond!

As Rosie was distributing some nesting materials the egg was repositioned to show off its dark end. Good to see Rosie hasn't run out of ink.

Rosie has now blasted past the typical interval for laying a second egg. Her longest previous interval was 75.75 hours, and it has now been almost 88 hours. This is uncharted territory, we will have to wait to see what happens over the next few days.
While we're waiting, here is a clip of Richmond (above) and Rosie being serenaded by a House Finch just to the left of Richmond.

After a couple of days of Will she? Won't she? Rosie laid her second egg this afternoon. What's unusual is that her egg-laying interval has been very consistent for the past six years, between 69-76 hours, or about three days. This interval was closer to five days, at 117.5 hours. If she lays a third egg, it may come on Saturday. Or not, we do not know.

Today Richmond delivered the 64th to be fish entered into this season's Fish Matrix. How many days has it taken to bring 64 fish?
This year it took 39 days.
In 2019 it took 31 days.
In 2021 (the fastest) it took 23 days.
In 2022 (when Richmond had a talon injury) it took 53 days.
https://youtu.be/mLOILVC5u0g
Meanwhile, Rosie has not laid a third egg yet, yesterday was the typical window for her previous schedule.

It was a quiet day of incubation today. Here's a 35 second time-lapse of the famous San Francisco fog rolling in while Rosie and Richmond go about their business.

Sittin’ on my Bay Cafe, slurpin’ sashimi over the Bay.
Oh, yeah, Rosie has it good today, with the Bay Bridge and Port of Oakland behind her, and Richmond bringing her three fish today — so far! Quite the variety, too, a Halibut, Surf Perch, and Striped Bass.

Exciting news! Lassen (banded ZD in 2020) was spotted with a mate at a nest platform about 22 miles from the Whirley crane.
While Lassen is the third juvenile to have been sighted after returning from their first migration, he is the first to be seen establishing his own nest. Rivet (ZR) from the 2017 cohort was seen May 16, 2019, and Victory (VU) from the 2018 cohort was seen May 9, 2020.
