Egg #2 - laid Tuesday, May 9 at ~5:35pm MDT
It wasn't so easy to get a good look at #2 as the egg cup is quite deep, but over the course of the evening there were a few brief glimpses....

While Rosie and Richmond are definitely the stars of these cameras, the skies this spring have been a sight to behold. Here's a five-minute time-lapse video of the best, with special guest appearances by Rosie and Richmond.

Between episodes of corvid chasing, Rosie would return and gently knock on Richmond to dislodge him so she could take her turn incubating.

But both the flip-flopping weather and the increase in human activity near the Boat House hasn’t deterred our beloved Boat House couple, Dory and Skiff, from their incubatory responsibilities. And, more importantly, Dory has managed to lay 2 more eggs since last week’s nest update! She laid her first egg on May 2nd at around 6am. The second egg followed five days later, May 7th, at 11pm. And just yesterday, May 10th, Dory rounded out the clutch with a third egg at around 2:45pm. Ospreys typically lay 3 eggs per clutch, so this will likely be her last egg

Greetings from Maine! This week has been characteristically vernal, alternately blustery and temperate, here in Bremen, Maine, where the Boat House nest is located. Pictured below is the Boat House with Dory and Skiff’s nest atop it. Their nest is a true marvel of avian architecture

Unlike previous visits, a raccoon ascended not only the Whirley crane, but also traveled far out the boom itself to the abandoned Raven nest—in broad daylight. Rosie expressed her alarm, and two Ravens flew in to scold and chase the raccoon away.

Rosie and Richmond have been incubating their two eggs for 28 days. Rosie's first egg has traditionally hatched around the 38th day. Here's a brief glimpse of the eggs during a fish delivery.

Richmond delivered a flopping fish this morning, after four days without deliveries (Rosie had caught a couple of large ones in the meantime). Glad to see you back in gear, Richmond!

And we have a hatch! After 36 days and 15 hours, Rosie and Richmond were both present for the nestling's first flops out of the egg. Congratulations R&R!
Edit to add: further examination of video indicates the hatch may have occurred around 5:27 am, or even earlier when there was no lighting.

Some people asked why we believe it was the second egg that hatched instead of the first. The short answer is we don’t know for sure yet. Below is the long answer. 😀
We do know Rosie’s average incubation time for a first egg (the time differs for first, second, and third eggs) is 38 days 8 hours. At the time of this morning’s hatch, the first egg would have been incubated 41 days, 12 hours. Median hatch time for second eggs is 36 days, 19 hours. If it was the second egg it would have been incubated 36 days, 15 hours. So, the timing appears to fit historical data for second eggs and not first eggs.
But 42 days of incubation is still within the “normal range” for Osprey incubation. In addition, several factors may have slowed egg development this year compared to previous years:
🐣 The nest is shallower, with less organic material beneath it. Organic materials usually heat up as they decompose and help keep the eggs warm. Cooler conditions = slower development.
🐣 The nest is built upon a metal plate, which could be absorbing some of the organic matter’s warmth, making for a slightly cooler nest.
🐣 This spring has been overall cooler than usual.
So while the historical data lead us to suspect the first egg already passed its “hatch by” date, it’s unclear exactly which egg has hatched yet. As time passes and the Rosie allows us glimpses of the remaining egg it should be possible to identify which egg remains, and of course, if another chick appears, then the delay-due-to-cooling theory may have merit.
For now, celebrations continue for the first hatch. Welcome, little Osprey!

It's well known that Richmond loves incubating the eggs. But once there is a squiggly little chick under there? Whoa Nelly! We are proud of him for lasting 36 seconds this year. 😍
Now that you've proven what a good dad you are, Richmond, you can go catch some more fish.

Through a community effort comparing screenshots between the first egg and the unhatched egg, it appears pretty conclusive that the first egg was not viable, and the second egg hatched within Rosie's typical hatch window. Looks like Rosie and Richmond have one nestling to dote upon this season!
Richmond delivered a nice, big Striped Bass this morning.

With heavy hearts we must share the unexpected news that our sole nestling appears to have died overnight. The five-day-old was last seen bobbing on the nest around 8:30 pm last night, just before dark. Despite exhaustive review of video and live action, there has been no sign of the hatchling since.
The cause of death is unknown, and given the nest location this year we most likely will never know. There will be no attempt made to retrieve the nestling, it is too difficult to access the nest in its new location.
Rosie continues to incubate the non-viable egg, providing a unique opportunity to learn from this situation to see what will happen next. Rosie and Richmond have had a long run of successful nesting seasons, but Osprey nestlings have less than a 50% chance of survival and with only one hatchling this year the mortality figures bite deep. The caring volunteers who help bring you news and highlights will be mourning with you the loss of this small but important life.
We will continue to follow Rosie and Richmond’s journey this season, and hope to find some positive notes in these unusual times.

Rousing Rosie spent about an hour on the rail this morning. Richmond has spent about two hours on the upper nest today so far. Some Gulls popped in and out a few times, and Ravens once.

Boat House, Hog Island, Maine

Welcome to the world, Skipper! Last week, we welcomed the first of Dory and Skiff's hatchlings to the world.
Image
Unfortunately, the Boat House cam went down during the predicted hatch dates for the other two eggs. This is an issue with the cams, so we are waiting on a few things to get the BH cam up and running. We want to ensure that enough time passes after the anticipated hatch date of the last chick before we can have someone diagnose/repair the issue. I know this is frustrating timing, but all of us, I'm sure, want to ensure the ospreys' safety and comfort- especially during hatch time! We don't want to scare Dory and Skiff off of the nest due to human disturbance, or place undue stress on the little ones, so we are waiting an appropriate amount of time to do repairs. In the meantime, I appreciate your patience and am happy to answer any osprey questions in the meantime!

ORI Lauren Mod

Hi Everyone! Hope you've been having good weeks- it's been hectic as usual here at the ORI office, but I did make it out to the platform yesterday afternoon for a few minutes (I was helping out in the field most of the day).

29 June 2023- afternoon Osprey platform check
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtEs2zX_zwA

I was so glad my timing worked out how it did- right when I got there (and started getting the video), the chicks were visible! After a short amount of time, Charlotte went into sun umbrella mode and kept the two chicks safely shaded underneath her from the very hot sun. I wasn't able to spend much time there (had to go run to the bank and post office, and then back out into the field later that night for a Short-eared Owl survey), but glad I was able to see them! Seeing the two chicks always brings a big smile :)

No concrete updates on the cams yet, but I did hear that the repair work will require a tech coming back out here... I'll work on getting an estimated timeline on that- I know they've been busy with other cams!

I'm going to attempt to get back out to the Ospreys on Monday, but that will depend on how a few other projects are going :)
