76.Crimes against nesting eagles in northern Germany. May 2015

Two and a half month ago a WtE nest near the village of Stangheck was destroyed when the tree was cut down. According to the article, this case is not an isolated incident. Several nests and clutches have been vandalised in the region during the last years, and breeding pairs left their territories due to intentional human disturbance.

“The white-tailed eagles on Hoy have been seen in the area every spring and summer since 2013, and are both thought to be young birds aged between four and five years. This was their first known nesting attempt and although they were unsuccessful in raising chicks this year, the RSPB said that the pair have gained vital experience for future nesting attempts.”

"The number of white-tailed eagles in Scotland has reached 100 breeding pairs, according to conservationists. The birds, also known as sea eagles, were absent from the UK for nearly 60 years until a re-introduction programme began in 1975. The first young white-tailed eagles from Norway were released on Rum. A total of 82 young eagles were released over 10 years on the island, with the first wild chick fledging on Mull in 1985."

94.Rare eagle chicks hatch in Clare. June 2015

“White-tailed Eagles have successfully hatched chicks on Lough Derg at Mountshannon, County Clare, according to the Golden Eagle Trust. This pair of eagles created history in 2013 when they reared the first chicks to fly from a nest in Ireland in over 100 years. The pair also reared the only chick to successfully fledge from a nest in 2014.”

95.White-tailed eagle chicks hatch in five nests. Ireland, June 2015

Eight pairs of eagles nested and laid eggs with five of these hatching chicks in counties Cork, Clare, Kerry and Galway. Three other pairs proved unsuccessful in Kerry.
