It was awake at 1:10 p.m. ;-).
Yesterday and the day before too, but I couldn't detect any changes in the nest. Branches and twigs are just like the days before. Seems the couple decided again to breed in the other nest nearby.

Cam works again since yesterday after being off for quite a while. But it does not look like anything is going to happen here either.

In his latest report about LSE fitted with transmitters Bernd Meyburg reports the loss of 2 eagles with transmitters in this migration season: one male was shot in Turkey and the female Marta, which was followed by a German newspaper last season, did not return to her breeding place either, was apparently lost in Poland. In his report he also writes about not all pairs having started to breed due to an apparent lack of food - mice, voles and amphibians seem to be scarce this spring. He also mentions the abandoned nests in Latvia.

Sad news. The Estonian owl cam shows that birds are more on the menu than voles or frogs. Maybe that is the reason why "our" LSEs do not breed this season.

Do buzzard couples also abandon their nests?

I think this is not a question of species - it is a question if the nesting birds see no future in breeding, are disturbed, chased away or in another way prevented (e. g. by weather conditions) from laying eggs, incubating them or even raising already hatched chicks. Nature does not ask questions of morale like "mother's or child's life" like we human beings do. A grown-up healthy female will be able to have more offspring whereas a chick or several chicks first have to grow up to be able to have offspring.

I thought buzzards eat similar food with LSEs, so if LSEs abandon their nests because of the lack of food buzzards should do the same. But if they don't must be some other reason.

For one we don't know about the situation in Estonia, the abandoned LSE nest/egg is in Latvia, a good 150 km from the buzzards, which can already make a difference. Furthermore, don't forget, LSE and buzzards have slightly different ways to hunt for food. LSE are much more specialised in their demands for habitat. In that matter, both Black and White Storks don't eat so much different as well, but they also forage in different surroundings.
Last year also in the beginning the situation on this nest was not so rosy, we saw earth worms arriving instead of mice. We will have to wait and see how the situation in the buzzard nest will develop, but so far I have a feeling that neither of the adults seems to starve.

The nest is almost untouched, but chick of Lesser Spotted Eagle is possible to hear near-by.
We need to check, if there is one more nest somewhere.
