asteria wrote: April 4th, 2022, 6:48 pm Karl flies to the North as soon as the wind is from the South(in day time) even if the weather is cold. Half frozen frogs are not that bad food and it easy to catch them.
Asteria
Black Storks can also fly with crosswind.
They do not necessarily need tailwind to fly (although it is nice and fast for them).
The only wind they do not like to fly in is (strong) headwind. That is a waste of energy.

And yes, hibernating frogs hardly move at all, so they may seem easy to catch. But one has to be able to find them first! Aquatic frogs hide at the bottom of water bodies when it is cold. Frog species and toads that spend most of their time on land will usually burrow down below the frost line in burrows or cavities.

Well done, Karl !

Karl II is already near Polostevichi, in the northwestern part of the Gomel Region/Oblast. Almost in the Minsk Oblast.

Polostevichi is a locality in Gomel Oblast, situated northeast of Bol'shiye Steblevichi, and south of Timoshevichi.

The relief is beyond description.
However, there must be many other migratory birds in the dangerous area. No bird (or other animal) should suffer because of the current madness. My feelings, when I think about it, are also beyond description.
Thanks for the great work here

It is very good to see you again, Trine!

I totally agree, Trine. What we see happening there is such a disgrace… It is a disaster for both humans and animals. It is horrible.

Hello Bigfan!

I read you daily, and the other contributors here
Also, I cannot resist pointing to an ironic aspect: the architect of the horrors and terror is a man who once claimed to have flown together with the cranes...

Jo, I very much agree with you!
Unfortunately, the ice in my garden pond hasn't melted yet. And while driving around, I see that many small forest ditches are still frozen.
But the fact that Karl II is in Belarus now, is really great! Thank you very much, Anne!

Exactly!

I'm so glad we'll see Karl II on the nest again soon!
I hope to receive information about the location of Udu and Pikne too.
There are always worries about juveniles!

Yes, very well done, Karl II! :loveshower:

Hello everyone! Many thanks for your great work in this topic, Anne, Jo and Juta! :2thumbsup:
I watched Karl II's (and Eedis) route since a while, afraid what bad things could happen to them. Now I'm very relieved, that obviously both are safe. Thank heaven!!! :-)

Hello Michi!
I'm so glad to see you!
Welcome back.

Yes, very well done by Karl II. It’s a big relief.
Let's wait for Eedi, Nurme and Timmu now.
Although… with a bit of luck Eedi may have already passed Ukraine too this evening. Or almost… He was south of Vinnytsia this morning. Fingers crossed.
And our Timmu normally flies a safer route.

It has always been quite dangerous for our birds to fly home, even during normal conditions, but now they have to face this terrible war on top of it...

Thanks, Juta! :hi:

Yes, our Karl II is currently a little bit west of Padnyevichy, Valozhyn District, Minsk Region/Oblast in Belarus.
I’m glad that he sent data!

I will try to prepare a few more pictures. First I need to do the dishes

Edit: Here you are.

Yesterday's track. On April 5, Karl II flew 80.3 km. He spent the night in a little forest in the fields, between the two small villages Vorob'evichi and Chizhevichi

Today's track. On April 6, Karl II flew 117 km.

A view of Karl II's current (wide) area, near a “landscape and hydrology reserve”. He is somewhere on the edge of this forest, in the distance.
It looks indeed like a nice area. :2thumbsup:

So true! I hope, Eedi and all the others will also find a safe route through the Ukraine. I cross my fingers. :2thumbsup:

The destruction in Ukraine is a disaster for all the storks and many other animals native there. Certainly, many nests and habitats were destroyed.

Thank you for todays update and pictures from Karl II's route. :2thumbsup:
Soon we can expect him at home, at his nest. :D

Are there any informations, when the cam will go online? Isn't it high time?

Hi, Michi.
Yes, it is so close to nest time now but I understand there are snow storms in Estonia. Maybe Urmas is hoping to get to the nest before Karl II does. I will send e-mail to him but may not get a reply - it is a busy time for him.

Hello, Jo
thank you for the information. But don't you think, Urmas knows about the urgency? I guess, in 3 days Karl II is at home.
What bad luck with the weather. Surely it is difficult and dangerous to climb up the nest tree in snowy and stormy weather. We will see what happens.

Have a good night!
