Post by Polly »

Birdfriend :hi: , I ask myself that too.
We had a lot of guests here in the last few days. The nest was not defended. Teo seems to want to come to terms with the new woman. That's how I understand it.
I had the feeling that Vita did not want to leave this nest. Both were present after the chick robbery and showed attachment rituals. There is nothing more to do here for Vita. The hormones have certainly decreased .... It may be that it slowly migrates but returns in spring.
Interesting where all these Osprey come from. Some of them seem to have been couples. Passing through?
Or singles looking for partners or nests. I also wonder why Ospreys are pushing each other in the middle of the season.
Vita was often harassed.
G52 ... 2018 ringed 6km from here. So this nest does not seem to have been robbed. 6 kilometers are not for hawks.

"The size of the action area depends, among other things, on the gender, age, status (paired, unpaired) of the individual examined, as well as the season and the local food supply. In Hamburg, males flew an average of 8.6 km2 during the breeding season, [14] in Schleswig-Holstein 13–55 km2, [15] in Arizona / USA 18 km2 [16] and in Alaska / USA 39.8 km2. [17] Outside the breeding season, male territories in Schleswig-Holstein comprised 5–64 km2, and females in the same area 16–59 km2. [15] In central Sweden, males flew an average of 51 km2 (18–80 km2) in winter, females an average of 62 km2 (32–92 km2). [18] Finally, in northern Finland the winter home ranges of adult males averaged 88 km2 (79 to 97 km2), of juvenile males 110 km2 (50–170 km2), of adult females 69 km2 (48–94 km2) , of juvenile females 67 km2 (31–103 km2). [19] The overview shows the clear increase in the size of the territory with increasing latitude, this increase is certainly due to the greatly decreasing prey density towards the north, especially in winter."

Next spring will be very interesting. It will answer everything. :innocent:

Thank you very much for answering my question so extensive.

I still feel so sorry for Vita and Teo, especially Vita. She lost every offspring so far...
I know she is young.

Hellem :hi:

I was lucky enough to be sick and very busy at the same time. I was too weak to edit and document pictures.

Briefly the addendum to July 26th

Sighting of Teo.
05:34 Teo brings some grass
(or algae?), calls ... waits.
He looks sunken.

There were more visitors that day.

06:04 I heard her first.
And there were two ... they flutter and land over in the parent tree. And they chatter.

06:15 One of them lands on the edge of the nest, the second flies back and forth between the nest and the parent tree.

Then I didn't have any more sightings for the next few days.

30th July

(Hellem :innocent: )

When I open the camera, I notice that there was work going on here. I have not been able to observe it, there may be information from our observers in the Latvian forum. I haven't checked that.

13:19 And now the Goshawk visits the nest.
No signs of expression / formation of the horizontal stripes on the chest. 1st year .... a juvenile.

He is beautiful. It's macabre to say here, but a really pretty animal.

This juvenile is playful in terms of learning.
He fiddles and dances.

Maybe chick from last season. Last year we have heard here much calling from goshawk chicks.

Birdfriend :hi:

I don't think a juvenile from last year. Probably hatched this year.
The chest markings are flawless lengthways. No forming horizontal stripes, no restlessness in the chest plumage.

And he plays ... dancing is typical to me for young people who are learning.

Possibly first forays alone. It doesn't mean at the same time that he will stay here.

Did I miss hawk calls in the past year? Not really.
That's exactly what I pay attention to to know whether there is Goshawk territory here.

But - we heard and saw sparrowhawks.

It would be a good idea to keep this camera running through winter. In autumn and January / February hawks can be heard well. But it's probably not organizationally and financially feasible.

In the past few days there have been a number of visits from smaller curious visitors.

August 3rd

11:27 am Teo is doing a nest briefing. :innocent:
He lands with a branch, calls out briefly and quietly .... stands, looks ... waits.

Image

Image

Image

11:36 He leaves the nest after nothing happens.

Yes, personal opinion is not wanted, but I very much hope he will take care of himself.
Somehow Teo looks 'used'. I do worry about him a little. Especially since there are many thousands of kilometers of journey and dangers ahead of him.

Then again nothing.

No trace of Teo or Vita.

Well, we are in August. It is possible that at least Vita began her journey south.
Maybe we will get another sign from Teo. Usually he transforms his nest into a rumpled "Here I live" base before migrating.

We will see. :innocent:

5th of August

08:06 Warning calls from thrushes or blackbirds can be heard.
I have noted chokes but I am never sure. :dunno:

Rustling somewhere on / under the nest.
The same thing happened yesterday morning, by the way. Just like earlier in the morning today. Can it be the squirrel?

I notice unfamiliar sounds ... owl-like, cat-like ... I have difficulty interpreting them.

Good to hear:
08:05:56
08:07:23 - 53

08:08:13 The hawk-like pushes up into the nest. And gives exactly this sound!

Picture Polly with question marks on her forehead.

This drawing in the breast plumage is not striped. Not across, not lengthways.
Without context, I would be more likely to infer Osprey from the chest. :slap: (Only considered the drawing on the chest. It's not even spotted small ... it's spotted larger. I've never seen hawk-like like this before.)
Instead, white markings under the eyes. How they wear Ospreys. Not hawks.
I have since ruled out a shadow effect.

Maybe I'm crazy too. :rotf:

At first glance Goshawk, maybe Sparrowhawk ... although the beak is very powerful. But the sounds and the drawing confuse me.

You are asked!

Thank you Polly for reporting so fine and so much. I've no mental energy to watch the cam. Often I take a look at this forum to see what happened - to be prepared. Thanks also to all participants for your work.
