During the winter season, nest searches were conducted with the help of volunteers, and one of the areas to be searched was the Virkus Forest near Dobele. The good news is that this nest is successful this year and has 4 hatched chicks. Perhaps this year this is the only nest with such a number of chickens, in all the rest are 2-3. Admittedly, 2-3 stork chicks are easier to feed to parents than 4, so time will tell just how successful this nest is at the end of the season.
The bad news - This year is the worst in terms of unproductive nests. This year, 70% of all known nests are unproductive. Unfortunately, the proportion of non-productive nests in the total number of nests has never been higher.
We are grateful to all the supporters who have helped Maris Strazds to survey more than 100 nests so far and also to draw conclusions from what the Black Storks have been up to this year. Unfortunately, it is nothing good, but at least we know it and it is valuable. Let's keep up!

- too much young storklet perished in first days after they fly out of the nest and adult storks, raptors and also migrating birds are often victims. The numbers are very big - as a minimum, about 30 000 birds may be affected by an electric shock, medium 170 000, maximum 500 000 birds.
