Comment: The Birth of Global Art

Hi,

I submitted an article: The Birth of Global Art. It was not published by your editor, and I had a comment to explain the politic situation. I think some of you are against my article which was backed by outside political forces. When an American politician expressed his opinion in the international arena a month ago, he also inspired from my article to focus on China's policies that means my article was internationally influential.. I think my article has not been published because of the involvement of external political forces, which violates the academic principle of Wikipedia's neutrality.

In addition, I think your website is very complex, it is not easy to find my previous comments, I can’t see if there is any response to my comments so I could not respond.

With all due respect to the original poster, I doubt that his/her essay on "The Birth of Global Art" is an important historical document comparable to a resolution of a national legislature, much as I doubt that it was deleted for "political" reasons, rather than because it was not the sort of thing we host here. - Jmabel ! talk 10:08, 29 June 2019 (UTC)

He is talking about en:Damian De Montemas, which I think he means has to be written "Damian de Montemas". The files "on there" are the files transcluded to his wikipedia article, I assume. --HyperGaruda (talk) 04:41, 28 June 2019 (UTC)

@Dcdemont: If the issue is that a Wikipedia article has its title miscapitalized, you need to take that up at Wikipedia, not Wikimedia Commons.

Files flagged for copyright violation

I uploaded two files to Wikimedia Commons, and was notified that they were marked as a possible copyright violation because I included the URL. These photos were taken by me and are free to use, and therefore there is no copyright violation. I included the URL as a source, just as the page editor did for another image of mine that was used here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silver_City_Casino (I was contacted by a Wikipedia editor and asked for permission to use this image, and I granted that permission, so he included the link to my website.) I was simply trying to do the same thing with the two images I uploaded, as they came from the same site. How do I remove the copyright violation tag? The files are listed below:

• @Meburke66: At http://www.vegasinpictures.com/, you say "Copyright © 2019 Burke Enterprises" and give no indication of there being any available licenses. And of course we have no automatic way to know that the Meburke66 account is the same "Burke" as that site.
• If you own the copyright for all of the pictures on that site, and you intend to make all of the pictures available, then the simplest thing to do would be to indicate on that site that the pictures are available under the CC-BY-SA-4.0 license. If you want to release only specific pictures, you can put a page on that site indicating which images are available under that license (probably best to provide thumbnails as well as filenames) and link it from the relevant Commons pages.

@Jmabel: I revised the Westward Ho image URL to the exact page it came from (http://www.vegasinpictures.com/otherhotels.html), and you still removed it this afternoon. I'm sorry that I'm not a pro at how this works here on Wikimedia, but you didn't even give me a chance to correct the problem before removing. Makes me not even want to bother sharing photos here if that's how things are done.

I suggest you to follow this steps Commons:First steps to a better understanding.

You can not upload here photos that you did not took, so do not matter if you provide or not a link to the source that you upload a file.

We use here free licenses, that are the licenses used in those files. Follow the steps, and you if there's any questions tag me using {{u|Rodrigo.Argenton}}, and I'll help you out.

No, actually, Rodrigo, assuming he is correct in saying that he took these pictures I told him exactly what to do. To repeat:

Eu entendo que esse concurso foi mal gerido, e talvez não tenha sido corretamente orientada sobre as implicações de compartilhar uma foto conosco e nem para que trabalhamos como voluntários nesse site "ridículo", mas precisa ouvir:

Primeira coisa, vou lhe pedir para parar de utilizar o caps lock, na internet isso é uma tremenda de uma falta de educação, pois dá a entender que está gritando. Não dá para dialogar com alguém gritando. Certo?

Segundo, não, não está se violando nenhuma lei brasileira. Quando você participou do concurso, você licenciou uma versão da sua imagem sob cc-by-sa 3.0, quando fez o upload é informada sobre isso e lhe explicam o que é a licença, deveria ter lido. Mesmo que o concurso não fosse claro, o carregamento é bem claro, ele lhe alerta na primeira página, e na terceira sobre isso. Inclusive esses são os dizeres da terceira página:

"Eu, Ilana Lanksy, o detentor dos direitos autorais deste trabalho, concedo irrevogavelmente a qualquer um o direito de utilizar este trabalho sob a licença Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 4.0 (código legal).

Não foi uma sessão contratual na qual pode determinar o período, os usos,..., você, por livre vontade, trocou a licença que lhe reserva todos esses direitos de controle, por outra licença que abre mão destes na versão que carregou aqui.

As leis brasileiras preveem a licença Creative Commons, inclusive utilizada amplamente pelo governo, tanto em nível nacional, quanto em esferas estaduais.

Seus direitos morais são mantidos e seu nome será citado quando utilizarem a fotografia que aqui carregou, mas você abriu mão de alguns direitos patrimoniais, e foi avisada.

E seu nome não está vinculada a esta comunidade, essa comunidade é aberta, e só é uma plataforma, quando fez aquela escolha, na verdade você permitiu que qualquer pessoa use em qualquer site.

"afronta à sua reputação e imagem", como uma comunidade que preconiza livre conhecimento à toda humanidade, criação de conteúdo educacional aberto, fazendo isso sem fins lucrativos poderia ser considerada uma afronta?

Blvckboy bj, no, no license here you will be in the name of Wikimedia Commons.

We use free licenses, that mean that you still have right over the file, the attribution will be in your name, however you choose open the rights to use, distribute, study, and modify to whole Humanity.

What category should that be placed in?

No, because Category:Arch portals is a subcategory of Category:Portals, so by COM:OVERCAT, a category should generally go in at most one of those. Moreover, unless Category:Arches in Taiwan in unusually narrow in scope, I'd expect it to fall under Category:Arches (specifically, in Category:Arches by country. --bjh21 (talk) 13:44, 26 June 2019 (UTC)

Based on its name, I'd expect that Category:Arches in Taiwan would contain arches of all sorts. That would make it a subcategory of Category:Arches, but not a subcategory of Category:Arch portals, because it would contain media relating to arches that are not portals. However, it's possible that Category:Arches in Taiwan is poorly named, and it's only meant to contain arch portals (which would be a narrower scope than all arches), in which case it could legitimately be a subcategory of Category:Arch portals, but it should probably then be named Category:Arch portals in Taiwan. --bjh21 (talk) 12:53, 27 June 2019 (UTC)

Are these images in scope ? What about their weird file name ?

I know that some images of Fractal are in scope but this is just a small list from more that 1000 images.

Logos

Hello, I'd like to know when is it possible to upload a logo to commons and when it is not. Some Wikipedia articles about organizations have the organization's logo but some don't because it's not possible. I'd like to know when we can and when we cannot and how to.--SRuizR ¿Need something? 20:06, 27 June 2019 (UTC)

The logo must be either in public domain or released under a free licence or too simple to qualify for copyright protection. Ruslik (talk) 20:09, 27 June 2019 (UTC)

Hey SRuizR. Most of the logos here on Commons are uploaded because they fall below the threshold of originality, meaning that they are too simple to be protected under copyright, things like text and simple geometric shapes. More complex logos would have to uploaded locally, for example, to the Spanish Wikipedia itself, according to the rules that project has for including media under a claim of fair use. Some projects allow this more than others, and some projects do not allow it at all. The relevant guidance for es.wiki can be found at es:Wikipedia:Sobre el uso legítimo. What picture can I use?

I found a picture online which under google's advanced search settings was described as being able to "use non-commercially". I believe that Wikipedia is non-profit so could I use this picture?

Is it usual to use the definite article before "Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall"?

I looked at Category:Lincoln Memorial and I see that these categories(Category:Aerial views of the Lincoln Memorial, Category:Construction of the Lincoln Memorial, Category:Dedication of the Lincoln Memorial, Category:Presidents at the Lincoln Memorial, etc) have used "the" in the title. Crop overwrote original file

Hi everyone. I uploaded File:BB Winans and Joe Madison.jpg and proceeded to crop out BeBe Winans. Unfortunately this did not create a new file but instead overwrote the original. Is that because I failed to change the name of the file? I usually get a warning about that. Either way, we now no longer have a photo of Joe Madison, and I cannot transfer the original from FlickR again because the site believes we have the image already. Flags of Morocco and the SADR over Western Sahara map.png

File:Flags of Morocco and the SADR over Western Sahara map.png has been overwritten so many times that I dont know which version to revert to. Is anyone familiar with history of West Sahara and Morocco?--Roy17 (talk) 16:51, 30 June 2019 (UTC)

Can't we just delete it and replace any interwiki instances with File:Western Sahara conflict map.svg? The borders in the png file are oversimplified and the colour scheme is an eye sore. Most of the time the strip of land in the south and southwest is coloured blue (Morocco), while it is part of the SADR, i.e. brown. The earliest versions even had the SADR flag mirrored. While HyperGaruda is probably right, I think a COM:OVERWRITE analysis says that it should be reverted to the first version. Specifically:

• The version uploaded by Vispec on 1 December 2007 was reverted by Gandal el gris, and later by Aboyado and Reisio. I can't find any evidence that Gandal el gris ever withdrew their objection to this version.
• The version uploaded by Rekaf on 24 December 2007 (with no flags at all) was reverted by Koavf on 9 March 2008.
• The version uploaded by Koavf on 9 March 2008 (with the corrected flag) was reverted by Kailo70 immediately afterwards, and later by Isno and CHV. Kailo70 has made no other edits, so I don't think they've withdrawn their objection.
• The version uploaded by Xiamipi on 7 June 2009 (with Chinese text) was reverted by B1mbo.
• The version uploaded by Rülpsmann on 9 March 2010 (with corrected colours) was reverted by Xlamipi (sic). That's their most recent edit, so I don't think they've withdrawn their objections.

It's possible that some of the reverters have withdrawn their objections, but if they have they haven't done it anywhere obvious. Technically no-one has reverted Vispec's first two uploads (because Vispec overwrote them), but I think they were implicitly objected to by Gandal el gris. As a result, I think all the uploads after the first still have outstanding objections and should be reverted. --bjh21 (talk) 23:54, 30 June 2019 (UTC)

Manipulating categories in Android

Hi Iñaki LL, try one of the following methods:

• 1) Change the URL from commons.m.wikimedia.org to commons.wikimedia.org (remove the  · m )
• 2) enable desktop site from the menu. ( 'kebab' (three vertical dots) in Google chrome)
• 3) Click on desktop (see the bottom most point of the website).

Can I get help in uploading a picture of my mother to her Wikipedia page?

I did upload a picture I took of her nearly 50 years ago (and she's been dead over 40 years). It was there for a few months. Now it's gone.

public domain photo upload question

I would like to upload an image for an article (historical headshot photo of Edwin Sweetland from his time coaching at Ohio State). The image source is the 1906 Ohio State University Makio Yearbook (p. 265), and by virtue of its age would be considered to be public domain. Alternately it might be possible to link to the yearbook archive page that contains the image, but it's not easy to do as it is embedded in an archive search page and not directly linkable. Also, the archive has the entire yearbook page, instead of just the specific image I want to use. Can I upload the image I want and provide all of the relevant copyright info with the photo?

I recently was granted autopatrolled rights for no reason by Morgankevinj. I have talked to him about why I don't accepted(see: Re: Autopatrol given), but I have seen no changes in my user page. Because he edited "twice" and make a remark about me in the edit summary, just like you see here. I am here to request to remove autopatrol rights from my user page, but no one has yet to remove it. As was explained to you two years ago, autopatrol means you are more trusted than the average user and that your edits don't need to be monitored as closely as those of a new user. Using pictures from Twitter

Hello!

I'm trying to upload a picture of an actress that has pictures everywhere on the internet. She is a cam model and that's how she makes her living. Now, I try to make a page for her on Boobpedia, with pictures from her Twitter profile and other sites that she uploads them (e.g. Sharesome). If I take a picture and upload it on wikimedia, with links to the original post, wouldn't this qualify as fair use? I hope this is the right place to ask for this :)

Taking an image from other wiki

I, Qëndrim Bllata, am a new user. First I’ve seen a video how to add image and tried my best to add an image according to video. But some of my image are deleted due to my mistake. My question is, if I take an image from other wiki (like file:Gōroser.png) or other websites, is it possible for me to use such images, if yes can you teach how to do it?

File Update

Is there a way for me to update a file (it now has the metadata and has a transparent background) that I uploaded? I see the option for files that other people have uploaded, but I can't find an option for files that I have updated.Iceman0426 (talk) 00:16, 4 July 2019 (UTC)

• @Iceman0426: It would be a lot easier to answer this if you named a specific file, but on every file page, at the bottom of the "File History" section, there should be an "Upload a new version of this file" link. Using PD MacaoGov copyright for photos taken from official Macao SAR websites

@Ominae:Better not, as Macau copyright law states explicitly that official works that are in Macau public domain refers to "texts of treaties, laws and regulations and those of reports or decisions by authorities of any kind, and translations thereof." Cross renaming of two images required.

Hello All,

I made a mistake by incorrectly naming the two images files below.

FRANK C. GOUDY

L. F. TWITCHELL

The image Bench and bar of Colorado - FRANK C. GOUDY.png should actually be Bench and bar of Colorado - L. F. TWITCHELL.png and vice versa.

I attempted to rename them, but was given an error message reporting the file already exists, so I think I will require an administrator to cross rename them for me. Thanks for the help and sorry for causing the problem. Sp1nd01 (talk) 10:56, 4 July 2019 (UTC)

Can I upload a picture of the book cover? The book is over 100 years old.

And can I also upload a picture of the author which is in the book that is over 100 years old?

In the end credits, there is a (c) 1968, 2007 notice. So the copyright term is at least 95 years from 1968 (maybe even longer if the 2007 digital restoration counts as a separate work). Question regarding File uploading

Hello, I was wondering if someone could offer me some advice regarding uploading a certain file. You see, I have created an image of the 1682-1707 version of the HBC flag, and wish to upload it to Wikimedia. Though there are a few things I'm unsure about regarding the upload process...

1) I derived the image I created from two files, namely File:Hudson's Bay Company Flag.svg and File:British East India Company flag.svg. So does that mean I should list the original uploaders of both files as the Authors? Or, given that both files have had various new versions uploaded over the years by various different Users, should I put down "Various Wikimedia Users" under the Author label instead?

2) Both of the files I derived my image from are Licensed in the public domain. But here's the thing, the first file is labelled as being in the public domain "in its country of origin and other countries and areas where the copyright term is the author's life plus 100 years or less", while the second file is labelled as being in the public domain because the author released it as such. Hence I'm rather unsure exactly what License to put my image under if I do upload it.

Perhaps someone could please tell me exactly what I should do regarding the above problems?

@Snow Lion Fenian: Assuming you are willing to release your work into the public domain:

• Use {{Derived from}} in the sources to indicate both files.
• Reciprocally, place {{Derivative works}} on these source files.
• Use {{Cc-0}} or some comparable means of placing your uploaded file in the public domain.

I wouldn't concern myself that the reasons the two source files are in the public domain differ. It should suffice that you are drawing on public domain sources and placing your work in the public domain.

If you aren't willing to release your work into the public domain, it's still pretty much the same: provide an appropriate free license rather than {{Cc-0}}; of course, only your original contributions, whatever they may be, will have any claim of copyright. - Jmabel ! talk 16:31, 5 July 2019 (UTC)

Also, please do not upload such screenshots to Portuguese Wikipedia, as Portuguese Wikipedia does not accept fair use either. How should this be approached? I know some public domain copyright tags and OTRS...
