Many thanks @Anne7 for the beautiful pictures.

Hello @sova :hi:

Karl II and Kaia did very good feedings.

Two good feedings blew the chicks away.

Thanks Swenja :hi:

Karl II brought a lot of food.

All the chicks have a HUGE crop. :D

After the meal, Karl II preened his children.

Dad, this really tickled too much! :D

I don't mind a little tickle.

Swenja :hi:
I have no idea whether bill-clattering while raising the head is 'not done' by the standards of black storks. Maybe it is. It’s a good idea to continue to observe that behaviour in the future.
But Karl II doesn't seem to mind, I think. :puzzled:

I do notice that #3, like his/her mother actually, is very communicative, and a lively and expressive ‘little devil’. Perhaps Kaia is just easily irritated by a demanding chick?

BS parents are usually very patient, and don't punish their chicks for being busy or noisy. The concept of "punishment" is not part of their habits, is it? Teaching the chicks to behave obediently and modestly would not be helpful for their survival, in my opinion. And anxious (frequently ‘corrected’ by a parent) chicks will languish.

I have seen on occasion that if a chick hurts a parent with its beak during a feeding session, it is clearly not appreciated. But even then, the parent usually just stops feeding, or keeps its head away from the chick.

The deliberate plucking of feathers from the head of a chick seems unusual behaviour to me. I don't know what the exact reason is for Kaia’s frequent nervousness and weird behaviour. Maybe she can't find enough food. Maybe something else is going on.

I don't see this as "punishment" or anything like what Kaia does. Rather, what I'm saying is that Kaia doesn't find this gesture with her head up appropriate and reacts to the clatter. Black storks do not clatter in greeting.

There are many animals that do not tolerate misbehavior of their own kind in various ways. I would never speak of punishment as we humans understand it. They react to wrongdoing and shape their way in a way that is right for their kind.

Edit: Karl II also reacts to the head-high-peak rattling. He stops briefly in which he does and looks at the chick briefly. I don't know if Karl II breathes something in a black stork language that people cannot hear.
#1 and #2 make these head-high gestures without beak rattles.
But #3 does this especially with Kaia with beak rattles. As you say @anne7 "little devil".

22:05 Kaia goes into the nest from the curved branch. #1 Without beak rattles and #3 even without rattling.

Next data about Karl II scheduled today evening. No idea, why last transmission failed. There in feeding territory are some places without of GSM network, but rarely it really was the case in past. It affected more neighbor Eedi (with older type of transmitter).
Can imagine, if stork is during transmission time in some low place, e.g. channel or stream between hills to search for food, there may be no network.

They have been alone for quite a while. I hope nothing bad has happened to Karl and Kaia. So worried! :puzzled:

Hello pirkkokn :hi:
We will have to get used to the fact that Karl II and Kaia are now longer in search of food and only feed them 4-6 times.
Always on the condition that there is enough food.
We don't want to think about too little food at first. Let's assume the best!
