Last year there were heat waves in Estonia. That has not been the case so far this year.
So Karl II and Kaia didn't have to fetch water for the chicks. But they brought wet moss to the nest.

edit: I just saw that it's supposed to be hot this week.

Today Karl II flew 147 km! That’s a lot.
Battery level: 89%

Today Karl II appeared 4 times on the nest.

He spent the night in a tree near a brook that flows into a lake, about 23.5 km from the nest. He looks for food in that stream, until at least 09:25.
At 09:39 I see him flying home at a speed of 47 km/h.
At 09:54 he is still on his way, at a speed of 34 km/h.

At 10:06 he comes to the nest and serves fish.
At 10:09 he leaves again.
I see him looking for food in a nearby brooklet, about 1.5 km from the nest.

At 10:49 he is back at the nest. No feeding.
Kaia appears at 10:55 and Karl II flies out.
He flies with some detours to the place where last year the fish basket was installed, about 10 km from the nest. In that area he searches for food on a brook, between 11:24 and 11:54.
From there, he flies with a rather big diversions (and maybe a few short stops) back to the (wider) area where he has been in the early morning, 23.5 km from the nest. I see him in that area at several locations (along brooks and banks of a lake), between 13:54 and 15:44.
At 15:54 he flies in the direction of the nest, at a speed of 83 km/h.
On his way home, he stops at the place where I suspected (not sure!) this year's fish basket, about 9 km from the nest. He continues to fish along that brook until about 17:30.
At 17:34 he is flying home at 36 km/h.

At 17:42 Karl II arrives at the nest and serves fish.
At 17:44 he flies away again.
He immediately returns to his previous location, about 9 km from the nest.
He arrives there around 18:20 and stays fishing until around 19:45.
Then he returns to the nest at a speed of 46 km/h.

He is back at the nest at 20:01, with a big load of fish.
He leaves the nest at 20:07 and flies once more to the previous location, about 9 km from the nest, but this time not in a straight line.
At 20:34 (last shown time) he is still in flight, but almost there.


I hope I didn't make too many mistakes. It is not so easy to describe all the flights, times and feeding places in written form.

Karl II completed 147 km today. You don't even think how many km come together in a day when Karl II is on the road.

Do you remember at what age the chicks were first left alone at night in previous seasons? I don’t remember.

Today the two oldest chicks are 24 days old. And the little one is exactly 3 weeks old.

On Midsummer's Day the chicks were usually alone in other nests during the night. If the chicks hatched by the end of May.
So it's definitely from the age of 3 weeks.

With Karl II, however, it can happen that he still stays in the nest for a night on occasion. I think last year he stayed 1-2 more nights when it was suitable. Kaia was also in the nest overnight last year when the unfamiliar black storks were present.

Maybe it was the cuckoo that was too close.

At 12:35 the chicks were attentive too. Did someone fly over? Is there someone nearby?
Or were they watching or listening to the nearby cuckoo calling?
