Webmaster has been busy - he has made it possible for us to access Looduskalender with smartphones, tablets, etc.
I am going to try it with my Kindle!

had a free Saturday and made mobile site of Looduskalender.ee. Forum members are invited to test it with mobile devices: tablets and smartphones J

Just go www.looduskalender.ee with Your mobile device and site is optimized for small screen and lower data bandwith. Hope everything works

Just something to think about -

viewtopic.php?p=201441#p201441

Recently, we have been thinking about animated gifs.
There are things we need to consider when making them, and choosing which pics to put together to make a gif.
The reasons we don't have animated avatars and signatures also need to be considered when we make gifs.
Many people suffer from what we call photo-sensitive conditions - commonly, migraine, epilepsy etc, but there are other conditions which make bright lights, bright colours and flashing, blinking images visually uncomfortable. If there is a frequent fast change from dark to light, sky to trees,, it can be unpleasant to view.

Most of our cameras are fixed and show the same background constantly. Really, it is only with the Eagles Feeding Ground camera that we need to be careful about the images which are shown as gifs. I haven't seen any "difficult to view" gifs on this forum in recent days, but as it has been mentioned by some members, we thought we should make members aware of the problems caused by some animated gifs.

Gifs can give more information that a still image and most of us enjoy them, and enjoy making them. I hear that there are some forums which ban them, completely! We don't want to do that, either.

The topic Petition about Nimetu has been changed to a standard topic, so it sinks down the list of topics for now.
If the situation changes or is Madis wants us to make another effort, it can be revived again, any time.

Please, will you help ? Gaidis send me this mail

DEAR FRIENDS, OWL RESEARCHERS, OWL LOVERS

SUPPORT OWL RESARCH AND CONSERVATION IN LATVIA!

HELP LATVIAN OWL CONSERVATION SOCIETY!

As You know it is bad situation with funds for owl research and protection projects in Latvia. Now it is known that also for next year our government will not give any money for owls. Now our project is on an internet page where people can help with voting. VOTING DOES NOT COST ANYTHING! Total 15 projects are in this voting and only first 5 will be supported. Vote for projects continues until 28th February. We ask for just 3000 lats which is about 4100 EUR. The money would go to breeding owl monitoring in Latvia for all 2013 field season, covering fuel expanses and materials for new nestboxes. As well as funding will support migrating owl camps during spring at Kolka Cape and during autumn at Pape ornithological reseach station, covering accommodation for volunteers.

Go to the vote page:

http://www.labiedarbi.lv/lv/balso_par_p ... zpete.html

Select your own country and in the following field over the black button you need to write mobile phone number and press the black button “Saņemt kodu (bezmaksas)” means (take code (for free).

Then the field will change in the following way and after short time you will receive SMS with a vote code. You have to enter it in the field ``Kods`` and press the black button “Balsot!” (means Vote!)

And one more vote for owl conservation in Latvia is given. This vote DOES NOT COST ANYTHING, so please don't worry that it will take some money from You!!! Place and number of votes is possible to see in the left side of the page I sent You (Vieta means place, balsis - votes)! We need about 6000-7000 votes and maybe we will take one of the first 5 places and will get funding. Please send this information also to Your colleagues, friends and family members. If it is possible, please put this information to some web pages in Internet, Forums, Chats, Facebook, Twitter etc!

I would greatly appreciate Your help in this matter! If You have any ideas, questions, comments please contact me via e-mail – gaidis@birdinglatvia.lv

More informatios is in attached file!
Please, vote yourself and distribute it to everybody who could be interested in owl research and protection!

Thank You for Your help!

Right, the continent was no surprise, but I had more thought of the Brazilian cardinal. Maybe they wanted to have both, the Italian and the Non-Italian?

So they have both now - he has Italian roots ...

They said that he was already in the inner circle of the possible candidates at the last election eight years ago ... he was good that time and he is good this time, too

Yes, that's why I wrote they wanted both! We have to take it as it comes in any case! And his choice of name suggests a fondness for nature!

My first thought when I heard which name he had chosen! I wonder if he has a pet .... ???
But I think the interpretation of his name aims at more human background ....

Pope Francis looks such a pious and simple man. I hope he has the strength to clean up the vatican mess.
I wish him well.

You are right, Bea, Franz von Assisi is the patron of the animals.
But I dare to doubt that the church with a pope Franziskus will do something for the animals – has the church ever done anything for the animals?

Well, you could send him a letter. May be he has a great heart and will do something in this direction, e.g. intervene this cruel male sport in Malta (shooting and hunting down the exhausted birds from Africa).

Hello - am I right on the thread "What's going on?"
So back to the :innocent: intention - to inform about "what's going on" apart from religious things...
Please pay attention to a 45' lasting TV programme (today very  soon for our German readers) on German NDR named "Ostsee (Baltic Sea) Report" - original web page: http://www.ndr.de/fernsehen/epg/epg1157 ... 37063.html
If you wait 1 day or more you can find it in the "Mediathek" (http://www.ndr.de/mediathek) Fill in the name of the programme top left side.
WHY I am posting this? Theme of this programme is "Winterreise durch Estland  ".
Subjects will be
- Saaremaa island - its seals on Vilsandi NP
- Icecars on Peipsi lake
- Pastoral care between Tallinn and Tartu: Portrait of German parson M. Burghardt
- Everyday life at the most popular Baltic university - on the road with a German linguistic assistant in Tartu
- Ice-Sauna in Finnland: Visitors' magnet Snow hotel in Rovaniemi

Don't hesitate about your missing German knowledge. If you are fluent with Estonian topics the pictures speak for themselves

After all this eternal winter caprioles (U.K. under a snow carpet!!!) I wish everybody a soon start of SPRINGtime...
