As Fund-raising is going so well, now we need to think about next year's activity.
36 contributors have, between them, collected 1,845 euros. Now, we want to ask those contributors to think about possible outcomes for 2018.

As Karl and Kati's nest is damaged it is wise to think about how to proceed. On that topic you will see that Urmas has suggested three possible actions.
1. Do nothing and let the storks decide how to manage.
2. If they build a new nest, it can be found by data from Karl's transmitter (assuming it is in good working order by then)
3. Build an artifical nest near to the present, damaged one and hope they use it?

What do you think is a good course of action?

That's what I think we should do. I heard that Black Storks do not use nests that humans have built? (By WTE- Uku and Anna it was also )

1.+2. identical?! The problem is the safety of the chicks when the nest is repaired.

The risk is high. Can a stable repair aid be provided in advance?

If not, I would think it is better to disturb the nest even more. The storks do not have much time to experiment ... .

The new nest is found, the chicks ringed and equipped with transmitters and 2019 maybe with camera at the new nest we can again observe Karl

Concerning fund-raising I have a question. Migration map shows a lot of cranes with transmitters. Are their transmitters cheaper than that ones needed for our blackstorks? Or are cranes better supported than BS?

P.S: Many thanks to Japan for supporting Estonian Black Storks. It is wonderful to see how nature can unite people all over the world.

Aquiline - you refer to the leg-mounted transmitters? I saw that. I think Urmas has mentioned them, recently. We can ask him if he wants to use those, and what the cost is.

About artificial nests. There are many Black Stork nests built about 25 years ago and later. Most of them were not occupied by storks, because building was probably too late after falling of natural one. Other part was occupied and even successful.
Cranes are equipped with support of researchers of those species, this year there are more of them, but all together maybe quite similar number as storks. Nobody simply gives sources for transmitters, it is always case of special funding and/or projects. Crane guys are probably better in project writing last years.

Yes, on cranes are used leg mount transmitters. We can try something similar for Black Stork. Cost of leg mount transmitters is not lower as backpack type.

Urmas, a question:

Eedis "task" is to provide us the information about his feeding sites, because during last years in Karula NP the breeding success of Black Storks was remarkable higher as in general in Estonia and we want to know the reasons for that. In the future we try to find possibilities for to follow also some juvenile storks from Karula NP

Eedi was successful in breeding in 2015 and 2016. 2017 he (together with mate) occupied first old nest, but by some reason moved about 3 km away to the neighbors nest and started to refresh that one (actually artificial nest platform we built 2016 close old one (from 1989). He was very active in building, there was more as half of meter added new material.
But as you found out, we were dreaming together of webcam watchers - to know, where go and how behave juveniles from Karula NP!

Thank you, Urmas, for the answer. My hope was that these transmitters are cheaper because bird map shows much more cranes than blackstorks.
So the costs being equal, I think we should use the transmitters which are most comfortable for the storks.
