Birder's diary - 24.03

Hazel grouse

 

After the EOÜ council meeting at Järvselja we made a little forest trip there on the next morning. At sunrise the weather was quite calm and the forest was filled with the drumming of woodpeckers. A large gang of great spotted woodpeckers were calling, of the more exciting species black woodpecker, grey-headed woodpecker,  white-backed woodpecker and three-toed woodpecker could be seen-heard. In addition hazel grouses started calling too. The hikers got a decent energy boost from the  half hour and we could proceed to Tartu to the general meeting session.

At the general meeting legendary ornithologist Jüri Keskpaik was elected honorary member of the EOÜ. For the next three years a new 13 member council was also elected for the EOÜ. Council members are: Urmas Abel, Andrus Jair, Olev Lüütsepp, Riho Marja, Renno Nellis, Robert Oetjen, Margus Ots, Hannes Pehlak, Peeter Raudsepp, Urmas Sellis, Aarne Tuule, Tarvo Valker and Peep Veedla.
