"Charred pancake cup"  Limatünnik

It is a pleasure to report that the biodiversity of the Elva region includes the world of fungi too.

At first encounter consternation can be great – what a strange lump. Mushroom book wisdom says that it is an endangered species growing in mossy spruce forests. So it is – Sarcosoma globosa, or the “Charred pancake cup”.

Smaller ones are the size of a thumb top, larger have a diameter of 10-12 centimetres.

A beautiful velvety outer surface and a hymenium so smooth that the blue springtime sky is mirrored in it. Special and bewitching fungi, to hurry to the forest for, each spring as the snow melts, mind filled with the excitement of expectations. And they are there. Once more.

Read Erast Parmasto’s story about the Sarcosoma globosa. (In Estonian, journal Loodusesõber, 2003).
