Male house spider
Where humans live, there environments suitable for a house spider extend. If a tidy housewife won’t allow house spiders space in the family rooms the spiders try to manage in a garage, outbuilding or cellar. A moist space is actually preferable – in order not to dry out the house spider has to fill its need of water from the cell fluids of their prey animals.
House spiders, with a secretive lifestyle, operate at night, keeping to the darkest corners. Houseowners guess rather than know of their presence. The amazingly thin hunting web becomes visible only when it is covered with dust – probably it becomes visible for the prey animals too. The spider prepares a new trap very quickly and it does not use up much resources. If the housewife is diligent and cleans often and carefully the tenant generally moves out.
Usually people and house spiders meet only when the latter has been trapped in an open vessel, dropped into the sink or in whatever other spot.
It is time too to talk about fear of spiders or arachnophobia. „Sufferers“ differ, varying from mildly anxious to really panicky, among women as well as men. It is a so-called ”modern illness” because exposure to insects or other little creatures is minimal for modern people. Usually there is some brave person in the house who comes to the aid of the sufferer…
In a way the coexistence with house spiders is beneficial for us – they reduce the number of other insects in our lives.
