Tracks of two foxes. Mäha, Otepää uplands
The mating period makes the foxes more mobile, they are noticeably less cautious, and when they usually start moving as dusk falls then now they can be seen even in mid-day. The territory of a couple is quite large and it is marked by both the female and the male: markings are left on stones, tree stumps and stubs and bushes of urine together with a special liquid secreted from a tail gland, and even an observant human can detect this "foxy smell” in the forest. In the territory an intermittent barking can sometimes be heard, but this the foxes let be heard at other times too in moments of excitement.
A fox couple caught in camera view in daytime on Thursday at the white-tailed eagle feeding ground.
