Black Stork Nest 2 2025

Post by Anne7 »

Welcome to this new topic! :hi:

This beautiful black stork nest is located in Jõgeva County in Estonia.
It is a neighbouring nest to the former Jan & Janika Black Stork nest.
The nest was found in 2024 by Renno Nellis and he installed a trail camera.

On 14 March 2025, Urmas and Friends installed a webcam. They used the Jan & Janika camera.
This year, the owners of this nest arrived as early as 27 March. :headroll:

The nest tree and its surroundings

Urmas:
”The nest tree is an aspen, quite an old one. Aspens get easily tree diseases, so the nest tree is not in good health, as usual. There is old damage on the bark near the ground and the inside of the tree seems to be decaying. There is some risk of breaking in strong wind, during green time. Many bigger branches are broken already. The nest is partly supported by a broken branch and I did some fixing of the nest rim on the left edge. But I did not really step on the nest, it seemed not strong enough to hold me.

The forest around the nest is old, with different tree species and different ages of trees, like it should be in a natural forest. There is a small stream about 40m of the nest, but last year in July it was dry. So probably there’s not much fish in that brook.”

Jõgeva County

Jõgeva County (Estonian: Jõgeva maakond or Jõgevamaa) is one of 15 counties of Estonia. It is situated in eastern part of the country and borders Ida-Viru County to the north-east, Lake Peipus to the east, Tartu County to the south, Viljandi County to the south-west, Järva County to the north-west and Lääne-Viru County to the north.
The county is subdivided into municipalities. There are three rural municipalities (Estonian: vallad – parishes) in Jõgeva County: Põltsamaa Parish, Jõgeva Parish and Mustvee Parish.

Endla is a freshwater complex of peat bogs, swamp forests, lakes and rivers in central Estonia. The rivers, strips of forest and Lake Endla divide the site into eight bog areas. These were formed by post-glacial paludification processes of significant scientific interest. The Site is the best-preserved mire system in the area, and supports a rich variety of species, many of which are nationally or internationally threatened; it is especially important for maintaining the geographic range of plant species and communities common to raised bogs. Numerous nationally threatened bird species, such as golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), osprey (Pandion haliaetus) and northern lapwing (Vanellus vanellus) use the area for breeding. Human activities include agriculture and sport fishing, while the main threats to the Site are the impacts of old drainage systems, wastewater and agricultural pollution. The Site is an important area for water supply, conservation education, and scientific research. Educational facilities include a visitor centre, nature trails and birdwatching towers.

Floodplain of the Pedja River in Alam-Pedja Nature Reserve

Image
Photo: Joonas Plaan

Alam-Pedja Nature Reserve (Estonian: Alam-Pedja looduskaitseala) is the largest nature reserve in Estonia. It is a vast wilderness area which covers 342 km2 (85,000 acres) and consists of a complex of 5 large bogs separated by unregulated rivers, their floodplains, and extensive forests. The nature reserve aims to protect diverse ecosystems and rare species, mainly through preserving the natural development of forests and bogs and securing the continuing management of semi-natural floodplain grasslands.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alam-Pedja_Nature_Reserve

Alam-Pedja is a large flat wilderness in central Estonia. It is comprised of several mires separated by rivers, floodplain meadows and alluvial forests. Due to its flatness, the wetland is regularly flooded during rainy periods. It provides important spawning grounds for fish species such as Aral bream (Abramis brama), northern pike (Esox lucius) and Mesopotamian asp (Leuciscus aspius), and is the most important breeding Site in the Baltic states for great snipe (Gallinago media). In addition, several nationally threatened species can also be found breeding in the wetland. Until 1991 a part of the wetland was used as a bombing range, and remains the only area significantly affected by human activities. The main threats are the overgrowth of vegetation and uncontrolled leisure activities. As of 2020, two bog areas were being restored to their natural hydrological conditions. A management plan was being progressively implemented, with a visitor centre and two nature trails having opened in 2008.

Breeding season 2024 1/2

27 March: the first stork returned to the nest
1 April: the second stork was seen on the nest
3-5 April: snow in the forest and in the nest
15 May: the head of a chick was noticed for the first time
22 May: an intrusive stork came onto the nest, an adult threw him off
1 June: all five chicks were clearly visible
2 August: the last chick was seen on the nest branch
4 August: the last adult was observed on trail cam photo

Below you can see some beautiful trail camera images of breeding season 2024.
Thank you, Urmas!

Important events in breeding season 2025

Streaming
The camera went online on April 08, in the evening

Part 1: the first couple

Arrival
Both storks arrived on March 27.
Liz wrote: "The male arrived first, at 1:38 PM, the female at 5:37 PM." - viewtopic.php?p=950295#p950295

Eggs
1st egg: presumably during the night of 04.04 to 05.04
2nd egg: presumably during the night of 06.04 to 07.04
3rd egg: during the night of 08.04 to 09.04
4th egg: presumably during the night of 10.04 to 11.04
5th egg: presumably during the night of 12.04 to 13.04

THE MALE IS MISSING
5 May - At 10:48 the male flew out. Presumably to chase away the intruder.
See: viewtopic.php?p=954498#p954498
The male has not returned home since. It is unknown what happened to him.

6 May - First “egg talk” was heard, and a pip in an egg was observed.

7 May - At 02:00 the camera switched off. Empty batteries.

THE MALE IS BACK
11 May - At 09:45 the transmission resumed.
See: viewtopic.php?p=955565#p955565
In the archive could be observed that on 11 May at 09:43 another fierce fight happened at the nest, between the male and the intruder. The chicks were trampled.
- 2 chicks died and were afterwards removed from the nest and dropped into the forest by the intruder.
- 2 other chicks are apparently OK, as far as we can tell.
- The 5th egg is hatching (egg talk has been heard)
- It’s clear that our missing male returned to the nest while the camera was off.

12 May
The two remaining chicks died due to hypothermia and lack of food. They were both eaten by a BS, presumably by the female.
The 5th egg, which was clearly hatching on 11 May, did not survive the events either.

13 May
- The intruder dropped the 5th egg in the forest.
- The female threw the intruder out of the nest. See: viewtopic.php?p=956028#p956028
The battle for the nest (and for the initial female) is not yet settled, for now.
- A female BS with ring number 718A, hatched in 2022 in Harjumaa (Harju County), Estonia, landed on the far branch. She arrived at the same time as the intruder. As of that same moment, the initial female (who was on the nest), seemed to accept the intruder as her new mate. Coincidence? Probably not. Starting here: viewtopic.php?p=956045#p956045
- A merciless and nasty fight between the intruder and the initial male may have been decisive. Our initial male was thrown out. See: viewtopic.php?p=956084#p956084

14 May
It looks like the intruder has conquered both the nest and the initial female.
They mated on the nest. Will very late eggs (/a second clutch) be laid? Not impossible. We will see.
The initial male appears to have surrendered and has not been seen.

Part 2: the new couple

After numerous disturbances by the intruder and several fights on the nest, the complete brood of the first couple perished. As of May 14, the intruder and the initial female became the new pair inhabiting the nest. There have been many matings (successful and unsuccessful). The new male has dug the nestbowl and removed old (decaying?) nest material from it.

20 May
- 10:49:06 - The initial male with a gap in his right wing arrives on the nest. Thank you for noticing, Tanya!
- 10:49:29 - The female arrives, they sing together and they mate at 11:03 and at 11:22. (The last time she mated with her new male was on the same day at 09:31)
- 11:25 - The furious new male attacks. After a tough fight, the new male (?) is thrown out. The other male flies out to chase away his rival. At 11:27 the new male joins the female on the nest.
- 11:27 - Now the initial male attack and we see another harsh fight between the 2 males. The initial male is mercilessly thrown out of the nest, backwards… The new male flies out to chase him, or to continue the fight outside of the nest. How is this going to end?

21 May - In the early morning, we witnessed 3 more fights between the males. For the rest of the day, male 1 (with battered neck and head feathers) was with the female. Is Male #1 again the nest owner?

22 and 23 May were quiet days on the nest for the female and Male #1. Male #2 has not been seen.

24 May - The camera went off at 20:15. Male #2 has not been seen.

May 28 - The transmission resumed at 14:57. Male #2 is back on the nest. The female joins him in the evening. What happened with Male #1?

The inhabitants 2025 1/2

Part 1: the first couple

These Black Storks have neither rings nor a transmitter. We must learn to recognise them by pure observation. Not very easy to do.

We have two clear identifying marks:
- The lower part of the female's bill is clearly darker.
- the male has a large gap in his right wing, missing primary feathers.
Picture by Swenja: “Feathers are missing”
https://up.picr.de/49463061mu.jpg

April 19 - Their red eye patches look very similar. That doesn't facilitate recognition. :D
Who is who? I think the male is in front.
Image

April 22 - Such a pretty couple! Female, on the left, on the eggs. Male on the right.
Image

April 22 - Female on the left, brooding. Male standing in front of her. ❤️

April 7th

The first pics of April 7th (rewinding).
The image quality is not very good. Windy weather, and screenshots from my tablet.

I’ve seen 2 eggs on the nest. :headroll:
Maybe there are already more. And some eggs are still in the “pipeline”, I guess.

09:17 Both parents are at home
Image

One spreads it’s wings and flies out. Is that the male or the female?
Image

Yes, 2 eggs are visible.
