The tradition of electing an animal of the year has not existed for long. The first attempt to have an animal of the year goes back 9 years, when in 2007 the badger was to have the title.

The web camera monitoring the doings of red deer is back again, in the same place where it ended in spring.
The bellows and growls that reach the microphone tell us that the rut period of red deer has started with a swing.
We will see if our old friends will use the same trails as before. Perhaps Huubert, the most powerful buck with the mightiest antlers will be there too, and the mysterious ”hairy deer” who showed up a couple of times last season.
Looduskalender’s forum will surely not miss any interesting happenings.
Grey seal monitoring webcam

Once again we forward images from the Vilsandi National Park grey seal monitoring camera. After a third restoration attempt the system that had been damaged by storms has been almost wholly renewed. Not having a seal camera running in the Seal Year would be embarrassing …
It is the birthing period for the grey seals. The pups are in their white ”baby furs”, the females in flecked coats, and somewhat smaller than the dark males.

The Käsmu seashore camera that was damaged by lightning in August is working again. We decided to forward the web camera view on the Looduskalender page until we get the grey seal monitoring camera working again.
Aarne Vaik from the Käsmu Maritime Museum comments: "Responding to grumbles about the sea being there to be seen from any window in the museum 24 hours a day, we decided to set it up on our home page so that the envied "million dollar view“ can be the view of a million Estonians. I can recommend the look towards north in the evening and summer nights as Estonia’s most beautiful sky view. So we arranged the camera looking north. Even northern lights may be seen there. Watch carefully!"
