Cormorant ringed in Finland at the Admiraliteedi Bassein in Tallinn.

The summary of the first month of the ring finding contest arranged by Estbirding is now published in the blog: LINK *

Better months for finding ringed birds and reading their rings are yet ahead so it is not too late at all to join the contest.

Our southern neighbours have already met geese, stock doves and wood pigeons, lapwings and many other early spring migrating birds.

White-tailed eagle    Merikotkas        Haliaeëtus albicilla

Already in January white-tailed eagles start visiting their nests more often. In the video we see a 4-5 years old white-tailed eagle without rings. From the nest the bird flew to the right to perch in a tree as if it were settling down for the night.

Beautiful bird postage stamps in 2015

Common buzzard    Hiireviu       Buteo buteo

Among the stamps published in 2015 stamp enthusiasts chose an  otter stamp designed by Sándor Stern as the most beautiful. In second place came the stamp with a Bird of the Year, the honey buzzard, designed by Vladimir Taiger. Among the special stamps and envelope sets, the set created by Vladimir Taiger on the bird of the year theme  took the first place  by great majority.

Burbot       Luts      Lota lota

Another strange winter. The spawning of burbots does not benefit from this climate; until the turn of the year water temperature in our waters has been higher than usual. During the January cold wave the spawning of burbots started under the ice cover in rivers. In lakes it will be a little later. The mating period of burbots in Lake Peipus lasts up to 7 weeks.

All regular camera viewers know the greenfinch who tries to scare away all smaller birds and at the same time to eat. But it must retreat when larger birds arrive such as a jay, woodpecker, crow, jackdaw or pigeon.

Greenfinch         Rohevint        Carduelis chloris

In the morning the greenfinches arrive at the birdfeeder to hang out there. They feast on sunflower seeds on the spot, turning them in the beak to free the kernel from the shells.

VIDEO: Fur coats frosted by cold

On the seal beach on Thursday we saw at least a hundred individuals with frosty coats, peacefully basking. At the water’s edge it is of course less cold, about -12 degrees. On the western shore of Saaremaa, towards the Baltic, the water temperature approaches zero. Interesting whether the seals will remain on the ice during this year’s birthing period?
