The migration map of the cranes shows that all the Estonian cranes with transmitters have reached their winter quarters.

Their autumn migration was again very interesting and gave us much more knowledge about migration paths and wintering areas as well as migration behaviour.

The camera of the Animal of the Year is located in the Elistvere animal park where at present 4 spotted cats live: the lynx lady Gella, lynx men Lars and Koopailves and one young new-comer from East Virumaa. In camera view we will hopefully see Gella with light fur, also Lars who has a darker head and dark spots, and maybe also the shy Kooopailves who keeps himself to himself. The newcomer – who is evidently a young female and who is said to have been left in an empty dog enclosure in East Virumaa – was brought to live at Elistvere this year and is as yet accommodating herself to the other lynxes – we will not meet her to start with. The young newcomer will live on her own in her enclosure for some more time.

The age of this golden eagle should be more than 3 years, light tail feathers with a dark tip are visible, a lighter head plumage is shaping up

Golden eagle     Kaljukotkas or maakotkas    Aquila chrysaetos

The large, impressive and ancient birds mostly use a pine as nesting tree. Breeding adults can be counted as non-migratory birds. Some of the young birds have gone roving and some have arrived here from the north. Altogether there are less than a couple of hundred individuals in winter here. Foraging is often done at a distance from the breeding territory, in remote marsh, bog or forest areas.

Worthwhile checking your vegetable beds once more!

Carrot harvest  29.12.2017

In August I got no carrots for my soup from this bed, they were so tiny. Four months more of growing time and what a harvest.

Kristel harvested turnips too today from her Tartu city garden, in addition to the carrots. In the soil spiders moved around…
