Shaggy scalycaps
Shaggy scalycap Soomusmampel Pholiota squarrosa
The shaggy scalycap has not been introduced earlier in Looduskalender. October is a good time for the fruiting bodies of these mushrooms to appear (we see them start in September and the end in November).
Habitats are home gardens, parks, wooded meadows as well as forests. They grow tightly near each other or like a bush, frequently at the feet of living trees, but this is not a definite rule. Shaggy scalycaps are held to be semi-parasites on wood.
Straw yellow exterior, covered densely by dark brown, erect scales. The cap is dry, feels almost wood-like on touch and has a slightly unpleasant smell.
Based on literature data the shaggy scalycap may be held to be ”very conditionally” edible, rather leave it growing. Old mushrooms have been used to dye yarn; information on this is found on the appropriate web pages.
One more interesting fact about edibility: the shaggy scalycap may be poisonous in combination with alcohol.
