Estonian Osprey Nest (Irma & Ivo) 2018

Post by Bea »

Welcome everybody to the sixth season on this nest!

Introduction on LK main page in English: https://www.looduskalender.ee/n/en/node/2493

Irma and Ivo have raised one ospret during breeding season 2016 and two osprets in 2017, despite three eggs were laid in both seasons.
In 2016 one of the three laid eggs got lost by accident (it was stuck in Irma´s chestfeathers and at a take-off it fell out and over the rim) and later the smaller of the two hatched chicks was blown from the nest in a horrible storm.
In 2017 again one of three eggs was lost in a similar accident like 2016, egg was stuck in Irma´s petticoats and she took it out with her when starting to fly from the nest.

We are all hoping that Irma and Ivo will return safe and sound from their migration and that they will start a new breeding season, this time without unhappy accidents!

Ivo hatched and was ringed in 2013 by Joosep Tuvi, in a nest 50 km NNE in Jõgeva county

Irma was ringed as an adult bird, we don´t know anything about her hatching date

How to catch an adult osprey to ring it or equip it with a transmitter - documentation from Jürgen about an attempt in 2013:

Nest is located in South Estonia, Tartumaa, not far from a fish farm. Natural river and ponds are in vicinity, too.

Ospreys (Pandion heliaetus) reach body heights of 50-66 cm, and wingspans of 1,27 - 1,74 m. Females are bigger than males.

- Winglength ♂ 448 bis 495 mm ♀ 470 bis 518 mm
- Weight ♂ 1,12 bis 1,74 kg ♀ 1,21 bis 2,05 kg

Usually two or three eggs are laid and incubated 36-41 days.
Young Ospreys fledge after 50-54 days.

Statistic from our forum member Sunshine - thank you!
Sunshine wrote: August 10th, 2018, 11:02 am Checked a statistics about when the ospreys were last seen on the nest. Hopefully this year's very warm summer will make them linger a bit more..

For Irma:
in 2013 - she was last sighted on 23 August
in 2014 - 21 August
in 2015 - 19 August
in 2016 - 24 August
in 2017 - 20 August

So Irma might presumably start the migration any time from 19 to 24 August.

Chicks:
in 2013 Kaido last seen on 8 September, Kenno 12 September
in 2014 Elar and Aino were last seen on 12 September
in 2015 Yolanda last seen on 5 September, Niina on 15 September, Thor on 19 September
in 2016 Ivar last sen on 4 September
in 2017 Daimar was last seen on the nest on 27 August and Daisi on 11 September

So the young osprets can presumably migrate any time from ~ 27 August to 19 September

The male:
in 2013 Ilmar was last seen on 12 September
in 2014 Ilmar was last seen on 12 September
in 2015 Joosep (J3) last seen on 18 September
in 2016 Ivo last seen on 4 September
in 2017 Ivo last seen on 11 September

So Ivo might presumably start his migration journey any time from ~ 4 September to 18 September

Hello to all osprey fans :hi:

I prepared the topic for 2018 already "behind the curtains", to be ready for the season

Like probably most of you I already champ at the bit .... :whistling:

Hopefully our osprey cams will be online soon and then the new topic will be opened, now it is still locked.

Until this happens the 2017 topics will stay open
