Hatching of chicks could be watched in great tit nest with webcam

Linnuvaatleja news, www.linnuvaatleja.ee

On Sunday afternoon (June 25th) the hatching of the chicks could be watched in the nest in the tree trunk. It is surprising that the chicks hatched just then, since the great tit laid the last egg, the eighth one, in the nest only on June 16th. Normal calculations predicted that the chicks would not begin to hatch until June 28th (read here: When does a great tit actually start incubating? ). http://www.looduskalender.ee/n/en/node/1446

Glowworm light

A half-hour journey of a glowworm on a straw of grass.

The story of the "fern flower" told below is even more complicated

On this somewhat magical night we have deliberately searched for ”glowworms”, some of us surely also for the ”fern flower”. The one in a group who first finds a glowing glowworm will enjoy good luck this year.

Only the female glowworm glows – she has not been given the power of flight. The male glowworm, her suitor, is capable of flying and has to be tempted to approach by the glow

The flower of the oxeye daisy resembles that of the corn chamomile, but it is nearly twice as big. The corn chamomile, earlier a common weed in fields, has by now become so rare that even many botanists have never seen it growing.

From a sea of flowers the roe deer rose and scampered towards the forest. Alone; in the nearest surroundings there was no fawn on the ground. So the fawns are so small that they will not follow the mother yet. The doe keeps them hidden in a sheltered place and goes there from time to time to suckle them. The time in between she spends on nibbling grass and lying down resting

When does a great tit then actually start incubating?

Science news from Linnuvaatleja www.linnuvaatleja.ee
Translation Liis

The great tit lays one egg each day and starts the incubation after having laid the last egg. Usually there are about ten eggs in a clutch. While the great tit covers the eggs with nest material during the egg-laying period  it does not do so when it leaves the nest during the incubation period.

MY FOREST: Beaver – problem in the forest

The beaver has felled trees

A difficult question remains unsolved for our foresters: what to do with the beavers? Is this diligent tree feller and expander of rivers the scourge of forest owners? Or is it a rarity in nature, a vitally important and expensive symbol of our northern forests? In our present Estonian nature evidently both.

Closest to the truth is that we have not learnt to cope with the beavers that have returned to our forests. But we must learn. We must do this, Government officials as well as each of us on our own.
