Sea buckthorn plantations add colour along road verges.

The fruit of the sea buckthorn, a stone fruit or drupe, is oval, coloured yellow to orange. The fruits are attached to the branches with short stems (pedicels), strongly and tightly, and only grow on branches from the previous year.

The young ospreys are two and a half month old by now.

So loudly the food begging goes about. Since last week male Ivo is left as the food provider for the young ones, but he copes very well with the fishing.

Week in the woods: Harvested fields and animals moving more.

On going to check the trail cameras I met a roe deer family on a freshly cleared winter rapeseed field. It seems to be a fawn and its mother who have also passed the trail camera in the forest. The fawn trusts the adult in everything. The young deer-to-be noticed me but only stopped to observe. When decisions have to be made then the mother decides. The doe however did not notice me and so they nibbled peacefully on at the field verge.

While the doe was eating calmly the fawn did not let me out of its sight. Even on leaving the field it kept its ears laid back and continued observing.

I have observed the doings of roe deer on summer evenings but there is always the knowledge that nature is a harsh place to live in …

On the field of 5 hectares there are up to four roe females and a buck. Each has its own corner but until now the females have not brought along this year’s fawns.

Yesterday afternoon when male Karl was still there, the stork nest was visited by an admiral; this butterfly is already one of the generation born here.

Migrant butterflies usually arrive in Estonia in May or June.

We have not seen the first young stork that left for adventuring for three days. Probably he has started an independent life – if so, we wish good luck!

Waders at Havers

The strong western winds last weekend caused a rapid rise of the seawater level and by Saturday morning the sea already splashed only a few centimetres from our camera, on Sunday there was already deep choppy sea.

Before moving it the doings of waders could be observed directly at the camera and it was a good opportunity to identify bird species. Determining waders is otherwise a tricky enterprise even for experienced birdwatchers because of their similarity.

New camera. In the centre of the image there is a salt lick, which is why the animals visit the place at all. As autumn proceeds we expect ever more deer in camera view since in the later half of autumn the winter flocks start to gather. The site on the border between field and forest verge is a favourite place for roe deer.
