In addition to the grey herons recently (in 2015) about twenty great white egret pairs have come here to nest; they have a completely white plumage. Their nests are not directly in the camera’s field of view but they can be seen flying past. This species breeds in Estonia in only about ten locations, altogether 150-230 pairs.

In most grey heron nests there are already eggs in the beginning of April  (the clutches usually have  4-5 eggs) and the birds are incubating. This takes about 25 days, The chicks stay in the nest until July.

We can observe a part of the heron colony by an Axis 18x zoom camera that is installed on the same level as the nests in the top of a large pine. Some ten different heron nests are covered. The camera is mostly operated by Mutikluti, member of the LK forum.

SA Haapsalu and  the Lääne county museums including the Ants Laikmaa museum contribute in the activity.

The transmission goes in a Wi-Fi link to the Eliza mobile tower and from there by way of Tele2 cables into the EENet server. In the EENet server the video stream is split synchronically for the thousands of viewers.

The assistance of the local people in planning and installation of the devices deserves special mention.

More information about the herons and what is going on in camera view is in the LK Forum.
