The oldest stork chick, hatched on May 18, looking around

The adults have tidied away the egg shells to the nest verges so as not to disturb the chicks. All young birds have been fed, the nest ordered and the chicks despite the warm weather protected by the adult in the nest warmth.

We will see if the not yet hatched egg in the nest was not fertilized.

Three stork chicks and one egg but without cracks in the shell (on the visible side)

Yesterday there were holes in two of the eggs. The hatching chick must get used to breathing and for big birds that takes time.

This morning we had three healthy stork chicks in the nest.

Male Karl in the nest

Female Kati laid the eggs in the nest on April 16, 18, 20 and 22.

Helped by the hot weather in the last weeks incubation took a little more than a month. During the long incubation period of the black storks male Karl has supported Kati.

The friendly behaviour of the stork family has been a pleasure to watch for viewers.

...but it will soon get even more interesting.

Female Kati has laid four eggs in the nest – on April 16, 18, 20 and 22. The adults have raised the nest border; they also add to the nest materials as seen in the image.

Early morning in the stork nest.

We waited and hoped to see a third egg in the nest in the morning – and so it was.

Female Kati has regularly laid an egg every two days, on April 14, 18 and 20.

It is 5.15 in the morning

In the nest of the stork pair, carefully finished with moss in the last few days there was an egg in the early morning and the pair standing proudly beside it.

So the first egg was in the nest on April 16th.

For the third season we can follow the black stork pair nesting in the Karula National Park. There is a series of photos about the first installation of the camera and its prehistory on the ELF (Estonian Fund for Nature) community work page. At the installation of the camera this year the old nest had halfway collapsed and we built an artificial nest beside it.

Today in the springtime warmth the black stork male arrived in the stork nest, as usual as the first.

Familiar place but after more than half a year’s absence everything has to be checked…
