Yesterday morning the storklets were in the nest as usual…

The young storks left on migration as usual a little before they were three months old. They did not go on discovery trips together and they left from the nest at different times and in different directions. And how do we know?

As in every year the visits of the female stork becomes rarer in July until we one day notice that she has not been visiting the nest at all for several days – that is how she sets out on migration.

The last time that we saw the third storklet was on the same day that they became two and a half months old. There have been occasions in earlier years when a young bird that has been out straying around has returned again to the nest after four days …

Near the nest flying exercises go on in daytime too

Female Kati has not been seen since the beginning of August but so quietly the departure of the black stork females proceeds.

Hunger is what sets the young birds in action because the couple of feedings in a day by male Karl is no longer enough for youths grown big. They have to start acting and occupying themselves as their instincts tell them.

Birthday kids

Almost a week ago our stork chicks got rings on their legs as well as transmitters as light-weight backpacks on their backs. The birdmen get more information about the movements of the young birds before their breeding period arrives.

All operations were carried out simultaneously in order to disturb nest life as little as possible and everything passed successfully.

Storklets being brought back to nest

Today the storklets got transmitters on their backs and rings on their legs. Urmas Sellis together with other bird people undertook the task and not in the nest but under it – the procedure took some time. In daytime the adults are hunting for food and there is a smaller risk for the birdmen to ”get caught” by the adults.

Early morning grooming

With the trimming of the plumage less ”chick down” remains, the growing proper feathers get cared for and there will be fewer pestering parasites left – there may be quite a number of them in the nest.

The adults feed the young storks well, at least four rounds of food per day.

Male Karl feeding the chicks

There is less down left on the stork chicks thanks to their own  nibbling as well as that of the siblings, as a pastime. So they also get rid of  parasites in the nest and birds have plenty of them. The older ones and the a couple of days younger ones  can be distinguished by the length of their beaks.

Nest life lasts long for the stork chicks. In about three weeks they start flight exercises, then life gets interesting again.

Unbelievable how large fish the black storks manage to catch, in addition to gobble down.

Sucn a treat was of course too much for the only a week and half old stork chicks and went back into the craw of  female Kati

Family’s  daily resting time

The larger stork chick is two days older, the younger ones were hatched on the same day. The probably unfertilized egg still stands on the edge of the nest.
