On the last Sunday of March, March 26th, the traditional intercity birdwatching contest will take place.

The kick-off for the birdwatching will be already at 5 o’clock in the morning. Nobody should however be discouraged by the early hour because all observations made in the cities up to 1 p m will be taken in account.

The event has expanded steadily. Its aim is to make us aware of the richness of birds in cities and the arrival of migrating birds that has started. Last year observation results were received from 24 Estonian cities where 118 bird species were observed.

The spring this year is once more early, and so surely many migrating birds that have arrived here can be noted on the birdwatching day. To take part in the event you need not be on a birdwatching trip all the time and it isn’t necessary to know all bird species that occur in Estonia. The main thing is to find some time, even if it is only an hour to see the multitude of birds in cities and the arriving migrant birds. It is of course important that only the bird species that were quite certainly identified are recorded

Those who have photo equipment and use social media can post photos to the EOÜ Facebook group for identification help.

Summaries will be made on Sunday evening and the Estonian city with the longest species list will be found.
