Klaara incubating this morning
Tawny owl Kodukakk Strix aluco
Let us look back in time - Klaara laid the eggs on March 15, 18, 21, and 24. It is common among tawny owls that the eggs are laid at intervals of a few days.
When the first egg has been laid the female also starts incubating. Until the second egg we saw Klaara quite often moving outside in the evenings – after all she may well have needed to meet Klaus and socialize.
During the incubation they keep contact starting with hooting at dusk – good for Klaara to know if Klaus is already moving close to the nest trunk and if some goodies are to hope for. Klaara leaves the nest after 9 o’clock p m, she can then stretch her legs that have stiffened in the nest trunk.
Incubation until the first egg hatches lasts four weeks (depending on the weather sometimes amite longer). Thus we should see the first hatched tawny owl chick within the next few days.
In the last few days Klaara has been communicating quite actively with the eggs, the stormy weather recently has not given us a chance to hear the squeaks of an owl chick. When Klaara must warm the first hatched she does not necessarily fly out from the nest trunk in the evening.
Klaus has cared handsomely for the incubating female and brought small rodents (voles, bank voles, water voles), as well as some passerines.
Where does the male spend his day? Klaus naps in a dense old spruce hedge leaning one side against a tree trunk…
There is a quite short waiting time left.
