Pale brindled beauty Lumevaksik Phigalia pilosaria
The pale brindled moth – or beauty - is one of the first butterflies that will hatch at once after the snow thaws. It ends its flights already before the end of April.
The males are night active and willingly fly towards an artificial light.
In the evening the wingless females climb on to a tree trunk or branch to wait for a male. There they later also lay the eggs (incidentally, in spring wingless female moths of at least seven species move around). The caterpillars live on oaks or other broadleaf trees; we can see them for instance in parks.
The imagos, or adults, are able to fly already at a few degrees of warmth, and they tolerate frost well in a congealed state. The pale brindled beauty has become more common in Estonia in recent decades, in Finland they expand their distribution area towards north.
The life styles of the pale brindled beauty and the March moth are quite similar: LINK
