Wild strawberry       Metsmaasikas         Fragaria vesca

At Midsummer this year the wild strawberries with their amazing aroma can be enjoyed everywhere in Estonia.

The berry of the strawberry is botanically a pseudocarp or a false fruit. The most delicious  part, the red, delicate and fragrant flesh of the berry, is actually the remnant of the flower. The small seeds on the surface of the fruit are achenes which conceal the seeds of the strawberry plant in them.

The strawberry plant needs no description.
