September thorn
September thorn Tamme-sügisvaksik Ennomos erosarius
The September thorn is present in all of Estonia and is locally common. The moths fly in oak forests, broadleaf forests, parks and gardens in August and September.
At the same time as the September thorn three other very similar autumnal Ennomos species are in flight. They are active only at night and often fly to artificial lights. The moths resemble yellowed leaves both in flight and when sleeping in daytime. The fifth Ennomos species is spread south of Estonia, but also in the island of Gotland in Sweden and may one day also reach Estonia.
The female lays her eggs mainly in oak trees; wintering also takes place in the egg stage. The caterpillars hatch in the following spring.
