We are sad to announce the passing of Gennadi Skromnov, the founder and long-time lead editor of the nature portal Looduskalender. The Looduskalender he started in 2002 has become an indispensable guide to the wonderful world of Estonian nature for tens of thousands of Estonians and international nature enthusiasts.

Looduskalender had its humble beginnings in early spring 2002 as a sub-page of the website Ilm.ee, where summaries of current nature events were published a couple of times a week. However, Gennadi´s visionary spirit gave the idea an international dimension, and so the number of enthusiasts grew far beyond Estonia.

In collaboration with nature photographer Arne Ader, a concept was born that transformed Looduskalender into a daily news-providing and richly illustrated web publication. In 2004, it moved to its own independent domain, looduskalender.ee, which has since grown into one of the most beloved and largest nature portals in Estonia.

We extend our condolences to Gennadi´s family and friends.
