Case your carriage wheels in winter...

Title is not about studded winter tires but wise words about preparing for summer, from the times when carriage wheels were of iron-shod wood /Translator

All attentive Alutaguse bear camera viewers surely noticed that with cloudy weather and shortening days in autumn the image disappeared. The interruptions in transmission were due to power shortage. We went to the forest to improve the arrangements.

There are neither power nor communication lines near the bear observation ground. The image from the camera is forwarded from a transmitter in the highest spruce top to the Elisa mobile tower in Tudu. The necessary power for the camera and transmitter is provided by two solar panels and the batteries charged by them. The solar panels were installed in a small forest clearing near the camera. This power supply solution more or less worked but problems started when we installed lighting in the grounds in autumn. The lamp consumed so much power that the solar panels fell behind with supplying it. The situation grew worse as the days shortened and so it happened that in cloudy weather the camera image could not be transmitted. In a period when the bears were actively moving we did not want to make any major rearrangements.  A bear has a good memory and is an extremely cautious animal. And so we put off improvements to early winter.

In the old place sunshine was prevented from reaching the solar panels by trees that had grown up and thus a new place was needed for the panels. About a hundred meters away is a large young forest regrowth area. We installed the solar panels at its northern edge to catch a maximum of sun.

Hopefully we can now store enough sun power from the panels and the camera will run without interruptions.

The weather is favourable for the bears, there is about 30 centimetres of snow at Alutaguse and the bears sleep a peaceful winter sleep. Soon, already at Christmas, the first bear cubs will be born. The bear camera begins transmitting again in spring when the bears start to move again; and all who are interested are welcome to join us to watch the Alutaguse bears with their own eyes
