The buzzard must be on the feeding ground in early morning, before the white-tailed eagles, or in evening dusk.
In summer they are our most frequently seen raptors. Up to a few thousand individuals may stay as winterers; we have seen them in the web cameras in previous years as well.
The buzzard is a robust, powerfully built and short-tailed bird of prey. Its head is round, beak is black with a yellow base, legs are yellow. The plumage colour is a more complicated matter, but usually it leaves an impression of brown. Female birds are larger than the males, by more than a kilo by weight. The plumages of males and females are similar.
The flight of buzzards is somewhat awkward and rather heavy: they will not hit prey in the air. As the Estonian name hiireviu, “mouse buzzard”, says, they hunt mice moving on the ground, and are dependent on chance prey or carrion.
