Brambling

Brambling    Põhjavint      Fringilla montifringilla

Chaffinch      Metsvint       Fringilla coelebs

Both species have wintered in Estonia this year. The similarity between the species is in particular noticeable on the wings – with two white streaks – but the body shape, and weight and length too are almost the same for the relatives, in addition the sociable behaviour in wintertime.

The plumage of the brambling is more colourful, the rump area white. The head and front part of the back is black in spring-summer, throat and crop reddish. The plumage of the female is yellowish-brown, underparts light-coloured and the crop cream-coloured. The migration of bramblings generally begins in mid-April, and is often together with chaffinches. Only a few pairs nest here.

Our most numerous nester – the chaffinches are approximately one million pairs.  The male bird has a bluish grey head, cheeks brownish-red, chest and belly have wine red feathers. The wing undersides and the rump area are whitish. The female bird leaves a grey impression, only the back is greenish brown, underparts greenish-grey. The wing pattern and tail are characteristic and similar for the species.

The migration start can be expected already in mid-March, despite a late winter. There is cause to watch their early spring behaviour which the birds with their placid behaviour allow nicely.
