Viigerhüljes

Ringed seal     Viigerhüljes or viiger       Pusa hispida, earlier name Phoca hispida

During the birthing period belts had to be tightened, literally, because besides suckling female seals had not much time left for eating.

The food for the progeny is mainly from the thick layer of fat procured last year. The body transforms the fat into milk and when the fat is at an end the seal pup’s childhood ends.

The seal cows have lost weight and because the fur shedding period is coming, during which likewise there isn’t time to swim much in the sea, the stores of strength and energy must be replenished during a few weeks. Nature is however generous in this – fish are thronging to the shores for spawning and the table is lavishly set for the seals.
