A little weather and nature story from Saaremaalt

Recently we had visitors from the mainland. They said that the climate there was subtropical and that soon, instead of birch forests, we would have rain forests. No wonder either with temperatures above 30°C and rain every second day.

So incredibly different the weather is in our small Estonia.

There has been no proper rain in many places in Saaremaa since Midsummer.  The last significant rainfall was precisely on Midsummer eve. The land burns and the sand islets of Mändja beach are as hot and dry as Sahara.

In the dry arid grass of the courtyard milfoil valiantly withstands. But even this has played a trick in the heat. I have never noticed any lilac milfoil in my garden earlier. 'Lilac Beauty',  the guide says. From where did this beauty turn up here in the grass? Nobody has brought it here nor invited it.

Only the swallows, who teach each new generation flying perhaps know the answer.

Even the usual horsefly and mosquito plague seems to be milder this summer. Only the wasps won’t let themselves be discouraged by the heat. In the apples that fall from the tree before ripening they have pleasant mouthfuls.
