Red-eyed damselfly and fly

Red-eyed damselfly   Punasilm-liidrik   Erythromma najas

The males of this damselfly are noticeably pale blue, patterned in black, and are the only ones in the damselfly family with red eyes. The females’ eyes are yellowish, body colour greenish with yellow pattern. Body length is about three to four centimetres; they have a very long flight period and are a common species throughout Estonia whom we see until the end of August when they start to become fewer.

In warm daytime we notice them on the floating leaves of plants where they bask, from time to time making short flights.
