We had a chance to observe the action on the feeding site in real life the other day. There was of course very much more to be seen than the cameras manage to catch. The life of white-tailed eagles largely follows the doings of the ravens. The eagles are less interested in what meat there is at the feeding site than in what some raven happens to have got in its beak, and how to get at that. White-tailed eagles do walk on land but regrettably this does not often come into the camera view. When the water gets iced over the behaviour of the birds may change.
Five eagles were on the site on Saturday, three of them ringed (two from Finland and one Estonian). Sadly we were not able to get the whole numbering code sequence.
A fine eagle, born in Finland in 2006, has been on show most often. The ring code colours of that year are black-red, to be seen on the bird’s left foot.
