The whole of last week, nearly every day, frogs have been glimpsed momentarily moving in camera view – they head for the bottoms of water bodies to spend the winter. Despite the cold nights the frogs also cross roads in the evenings and always with the same aim. For wintering, mouths of creeks, rivers and ditches are suitable, also ponds, lakes and even water wells. Necessary conditions are that the water body will not freeze down to the bottom and a water temperature around 2-3 degrees. Actually the environment in our variable nature suits amphibians well.

Common or brown frogs are numerous and large: a mature specimen may be up to 10 centimetres long, but the ”frogs-to-be” that were hatched this year  winter as 3 centimetres long beings – by the way, they are not sexually mature until in their third year.

Common frogs belong to the so-called brown frogs: their muzzle is rounded, the belly patterned with a darker marble-like pattern which the photo shows well. The patterned belly confirms the identification of an adult common frog.
