Walking to work last night I could not believe that they were not the usual moving shafts of light in the sky that nightclubs often direct into the air to entice customers, but that these were light pillars. Since I had not brought along a camera i did not pay particular attention to the beams. Luckily there was another chance to admire them late tonight, and also to photograph them. It was particularly fascinating to see the beams rising from houses and other constructions, like searchlights.

The light pillars themselves are of artificial origin, created by light sources  with various powers, such as street lights or the already mentioned floodlights. For this simple reason light pillars are more often seen in cities where there is more of “light pollution”. But without the tiny ice crystals we would not see such a splendid show, thus nature still has its role in the phenomenon.
