Of the plants in our forests, the fruits of the daphne, or spurge laurel, belong to the most poisonous ones – actually the flowers, the fruits and even the bark are toxic. So it is useful to learn to recognise this sparsely branched, quite small bush, its berries, and the beautiful flowers in early spring in the undergrowth of our forests. From a botanical point of view the orange-red fruits of the daphne, sitting directly on the branches, are drupes, similar to the fruits of the plum tree.
